Shallow Latch

Does anyone know how to fix a shallow latch? My son is three weeks old and recently he has been making a noise that sounds like the suction being released. I googled it and everything points to shallow latch.

Also, my nipples are a little white after he feeds; I think its blanching? Is this caused by the shallow latch since hes mostly just on the nipple and doesn't have as much of the breast in his mouth. I should also mention that his latch starts off good, but sometime during the feeding, he changes the latch and it gets smaller.

Lastly, it feels like he is using his tongue now as well. It didn't used to feel like this, so maybe my positioning is wrong now although I haven't noticed that I have changed anything. Any help would be appreciated! :)

Re: Shallow Latch

  • My LO had this.  I watched youtube videos on latching.  I did the "sandwich" thing and I also tried different holds - cradle, cross cradle, football, etc.  The trick is to get your LO to open his mouth wider.  Make sure you watch for hungry cues so he's not OH MY GOD I'M STARVING and frantic - try to start getting him latched before that.  And be stubborn.  If the latch isn't good, pull him off and start over.  I thought that any latch was ok as long as my LO was feeding....but it's not true!  It took SEVERAL weeks but we worked through it.  Good luck!

  • It helped me to sort of "flip" my nipple into her mouth.  I'd hold my breast and point the nipple up.  Then run the nipple up from her chun toward her nose to get her to open her mouth wide, then "flip" my nipple in so that more of the underside of the breast is in her mouth.  If the latch seems wrong part way through, take him off and start again.  In the early days I might have to try to latch her several times before it was right.  Some links to explain it better:

  • It took me awhile..as my LO had a shallow latch alot..he would chomp at the bit because he would get so excited to eat..I had to encourage his chin to drop low with one of my fingers as I was latching him on.

Also, sandwich the nipple so it will go in the best, aim nipple kinda upward and back..lead in with chin..make sure you have an assymetrical latch as it makes it easier to get a deep latch too
