headaches from sleeping on side.

I'm getting really horrible headaches from sleeping on my side and terrible shoulder pain for some reason.

I think I'm going to try sleeping on my back but inclining my upper body.  Does anyone know if this is safe?  I know we're not supposed to sleep flat on our backs, but I would imagine that if I propped myself up with a few pillows I'd be alright.

Anyways, I hope you guys can give me some good opinions or other ideas for sleeping.

  • Is your pillow high enough?  If your neck's not at the right angle, it could cramp up your neck and slow blood supply.

  • I have a pillow from the chiropractor (one of those moulded ones) and it has COMPLETELY wiped out my headaches.
  • I always sleep on my back. I can't sleep on my sides because it hurts my hips.

  • I've been having lots of headaches lately.  I only sleep on my side as I'm afraid to sleep on my back having read not to.

Maybe that's the cause of my headaches!  Hmm!

They kind of came out of nowhere once I hit 13 weeks.

    Interesting!

  • I say try a new pillow or get two and stack them. If your neck isn't at the right angle then above poster is right, you will get headaches.
  • Interesting theory! Every morning I wake up with a headache like my head weighs a thousand pounds and I can barely lift it off the pillow! I hadn't considered that it was related to my sleeping position... I will have to experiment with this. The danger for sleeping on your back is that as baby gets bigger it puts weight on one of our major arteries or veins so it's bad for our circulation and can cause fainting, etc.
