DD was diagnosed w/ this today by her pedi. Freaked me out b/c I had never heard of it - but it's apparently common this time of year. It's often misdiagnosed as the flu - but DD was swabbed (how horrible is THAT?) and her flu test was negative. ANYWAY, she had a 104 at the pedi's office, and that was 2 hours after a dose of ibuprofen. That kinda freaked me out too - but pedi said that was common w/ this virus. So we need to keep her hydrated, alternate meds for fever, yadda yadda yadda.
Has anyone else dealt with this virus? He said she could have a fever for 3-5 days, and to call if it's not getting lower over that time period or if she's still looking as sick as she was today. B/c of the holiday coming - I'm hoping we can get her fever-free by Wed so that she's no longer contagious by Thursday (we have family coming in on Friday). If your DC had this- was the fever super long-lasting? Did you notice at least SOME improvement after a day w/ lots of fever-reducing meds?
She is just so miserable - and she is so excited about Christmas, I really want her to be able to participate as much as possible.
Thanks for any advice!
Re: adenovirus - anyone?
Yeah, DS had this a while back. Can't remember when exactly. I just remember the super high scary fever--really no other symptoms (except that which comes with a high fever, of course, like disrupted sleep, chills, sweating, etc.).
I'm sorry, I really don't remember how long it took it to run it's course. I tried to only give him meds when his fever was scary high, which was usually from about 11 pm-4 am. The rest of the time I wanted his body to do it's work. He was still nursing so he pretty much declined all solid foods and just nursed, so I was able to keep him hydrated that way.
Such a bummer, esp this close to Christmas. I remember him being so lethargic and totally not himself. I hope she feels better very soon!!
Thanks for your reply. Yeah, the high fever has definitely got me worried, but she seems a little more herself today which is a good sign. She's still running a 102 or so, even w/ the meds, but her demeanor is much better and the pedi said that would be a good sign that things were going the right way.
She's also been very thirsty which is good - so she's definitely staying very hydrated. I appreciate your advice! Here's hoping it's only going to get better from here on out
