Breastfeeding

5 day old and bleeding nipples

My son has a tongue tie (getting fixed tomorrow), and in the meantime BFing hurts beyond belief. He won't take a bottle at all (any kind of tried) so I'm getting to the point where I don't know what to do. The last time I fed him his mouth had blood in it (from me). I tried a nipple shield and he won't do it that way either.

Until his tongue tie is fixed, I can't take the time to go see lactation (I have a 2 year old too) and I feel like a complete mess. I just tried to pump and I got less than an ounce in about 15 mins.

Any help is appreciated!

Re: 5 day old and bleeding nipples

  • How about feeding what you express with a clean medicine dropper?

  • I had just gotten my milk at 5 days - you'll probably get more soon. His stomach is about the size of a golf ball right now, so his intake is about the same as your output, don't worry!

Honestly, it sounds pretty normal to me, and my son wasn't TTed.  It hurts, but it's normal.  I highly recommend sleeping topless.  Just put a towel underneath you!  You need to get air on them to help them heal.  Close the shades and try to keep them out as much as possible.

Also, are you using a pacifier?  I would recommend against comfort nursing while you are so raw.   It was my saving grace with my son.

  • I found a medicine dropper, so if we have to go that route we will. Thanks for the tip about sleeping topless, that's a good idea. I only wish he'd take a pacifier, he won't-- the comfort sucking is complicating our problem I think.

    Thanks for the tips ladies.

  • Congrats on your LO! My advice it to watch breastfeeding videos on YouTube. It helped me greatly with learning how to position baby and shows you how to proper latch baby on.Also the first week or two your breast will be sore, it takes a little while for mom and baby to get on the same page. Also try gel pads you can get them from Target or Walmart for about $9.99 or so they will be in the same area as breast pumps and they should help alot with the soreness. Hang in there :-) it was times I wanted to stop bc of the pain but so happy I stayed with it...My LO is now 2 months.
