Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Has anyone gone through this???

I remember the day I brought DS2 home from the hospital after my repeat c/s.  By the next morning, I felt like I had the flu--you know, that achy feeling.  Of course I was tired---being a new mom, bf'ing, etc.  But this achiness has never ceased.  Every joint hurts--all my muscles feel 'sore'...my knees, shoulders, even my fingers hurt.

Since then (May)--I've gotten a UTI (which I've never had in my life), C Diff (which is basically a colon infection)---that took about 3 rounds of antibiotics to cure, and a staph infection (no clue where I got that--they said a hot tub but I haven't been in one in many many years).  So yes--my body has been through a lot.  But I've been "clear" of it all for a bit now.

I've been seeing a chiropractor--she's suggested more iron in addition to my multi vitamin plus extra vit c and a probiotic.  I've done it all.  Still feel like crap!  I have no energy because I'm SOOOOOO freaking sore and achy.  My knees and even my thighs hurt--like the bone hurts.  I've had blood tests and they don't seem to see any arthritis or anything.

I'm starting to wonder what is causing this.  One thought is that in August I started birth control pills--maybe that's making it worse???  It does kind of seem like it's gotten worse the last few months.  Why would that be though????

Has ANYONE gone through this?????   I'm miserable.  I'm soooooooo tired from just being achy if that even sounds right.

Re: Has anyone gone through this???

  • Hi there,

One thing I would suggest is to be tested for any sort of Automimmnue. Especially if you have noticed that your knuckles are swelling or red.  I have an Autoimmune disease that is fairly rare.  The reason I figured it out is because I gave blood one day and after that I felt like I had been hit by a truck for like a week.  After that I just felt exhausted and had some frequent headaches and then my hips started to hurt. Sometimes these autoimmune disease can be jump started by some sort of "trauma" which your c/s could be considered.

I saw that you said they tested for arthritis.  My problem is muscular so yes it feels that my joints hurt but it is because the muscles are weakening.  It's just a thought. One way to tell is if your muscle enzyme levels are elevated. In order to get an exact diagnoses I had to get a muscle biopsy. Goodluck, I hope that it is something easier than this. Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • oh my gosh- I'm so sorry! You have been through the ringer. I haven't gone through this but wanted to suggest you have your minerals level checked. It almost sounds like Lyme disease, or gout. something along those lines. Have you been checked for fibromyalgia? SOMETHING isn't right, and in this day and age- there's no reason for you to be miserable This Long. Also- make an appt with an internist and a rare disease specialist. Please keep us posted! Living in chronic pain can really compromise your life.

  • I would also have them test you for a wheat allergy.  It can affect you in ways you never would have thought possible.  I hope your doctor figures out how to make you feel better.  Here's some interesting information about eating gluten if you have an intolerance can negatively affect your health.

I definitely know about gluten and wheat--as my first son is allergic--and it's horrible.  You are so right on that.  They tested me about 6 yrs ago for all kinds of allergies--- wheat wasn't one, but egg was.  I will say--I have been eating some cookies and baked goods with them in it---which of course any allergin is a poison.  You're right.  hmmmm

  • I went through a lot of joint and muscle pain for years and my pregnancy ended up being pretty achy because of it.  I also got a lot of headaches.  I've recently become a vegan and with the removal of all dairy from my diet, I've noticed a huge difference:  much less pain, no more headaches and an increase in energy. I definitely had an intolerance, if not an allergy, to dairy.

A friend of mine has a gluten allergy and she said she felt much the same way until she cut out what she's allergic to.  If you're allergic to eggs it could be that.

If you are allergic to egg you should buy an egg replacer to make baked goods with (which is a powder that is made with starch that you add water to).  I have an excellent baking book The Joy of Vegan Baking which has a lot of traditional baked goods but with egg-free substitutions.

  • I had something similar and they ended up testing me for Lyme and it was positive. I was on antibiotics for a month straight and it took a couple more months to feel better.

I would also ask about autoimmune diseases.

  • I don't know ladies--I'm just not thinking this is an allergic reaction.  I definitely know allergies--my son has many many severe ones.  I do know they can come in all shapes and sizes and issues--but this just feels like "pain" more than anything.  No tummy issues--- headaches but because of muscle tension.  Honestly--I feel like a drink (wine or whatever) would help loosen me up-but I'm too tired to drink!  LOL

yeah, they tested a couple times in the last several months--nothing showed up.

Did you have a rash???  I thought that always had a distinct rash?   No rashes here.

Ditto this - get tested for Lyme and autoimmune problems.

Also, it could be Fibromyalgia. My best friend has this and is just always aching, moreso at certain times of year and under certain weather conditions. I don't know a lot about it, but I know it causes unwarranted pain. Worth a shot?

I'm sorry that you're feeling bad! Lots of wishes to feel better soon.

I have fibromyalgia and would describe it as feeling like you have a flu that never goes away.

I was tested for Lymes, Celiac, rheumatoid arthritis, other autoimmune disorders, a host of digestive diseases (I was having digestive symptoms), and finally was diagnosed with fibro. It's worth bringing up with your doctor, at least. It can be brought on by things like a serious illness (in my case) or child birth.

Hope you're feeling better soon. I have made a lot of lifestyle changes and my fibro is well managed. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

  • Is there a chance something could have been left inside you during your c-section?

I was going to suggest this...the thyroid is kinda like the command center for your body, and if you aren't getting enough thyroid hormone then everything can be out of wack, and after your body went through something like childbirth, it's pretty normal for the thyroid to be really confused.  It's a simple blood test, and you can usually get results within 24 hours.  Once you start on a thyroid med, it can take a few weeks to feel a difference because it has to build up in your system, but I can tell you the first day I took I I felt a difference (this was 10 years ago, and I went from pretty much sleeping all day/every day to taking my meds and being able to rearrange furniture and clean my room - I was still living with my parents at the time).  Make an appointment with your doc, they should be able to test for it and if they see something bigger they can send you to an endocrinologist.  GL!
