*sigh* dreaded 15 mo vaccines, anyone else worry

Vaccines. It's no biggie that I worry about vaccines, they are just simple shots right?

Dh and I dread the upcoming vaccines and we didnt' like them in the past.  She has her 15 mo. well check today and with the weekend she had she will NOT get them today. But she may get them next week...or the next...

We know more today than we did 6 months, 8 months, 15 months ago about the pros and cons. As a lay person mom I am torn and worried. I am not sure what the doc's reaction will be after my million questions but hope he has answers to settle my worries. BLAH.

  • vaccines are scary business and not to be taken lightly. Has she ever reacted adversely to any of her previous vaccines? Does she have any allergies or other red flags that would put her in a higher risk group? My kids haven't had any of the above (knock on wood), so we move forward with the suggested schedule, but I still get nervous every time.

  • I may get flamed for this, but I would not get the shot until you feel comfortable with it.  You can always get a shot later, you can't unget it.  I see the benefit in vaccines, I totally get the herd immunity thing, but I don't agree with how many shots are given at each visit.  We chose not to get more than 2 done at a time, I will not vaccinate when Kate is sick, and we prioritized some shots over other.  DTaP?  Got it on schedule.  Polio?  I felt comfortable waiting on that once since Polio has been eradicated in the western hemisphere.

We have done a very delayed schedule, but Kate will be fully caught up before she starts preschool at age 3.

ETA: I'm more cautious because I have had a (suspected) vaccine reaction. Kate has had a localized reaction which freaked the nurses out a bit but the pedi wasn't concerned with.

  • Ditto rssn.  I always felt okay with vaccines because my kids are low-risk - no allergies, never had a reaction to the vaccines, healthy immune systems.

  • I've never really worried, except at what a blubbering mess I am when I see my baby hurt and crying.  Embarrassed

ditto kiarox for me. we did delayed and no more than 2 at a time. and we still haven't done MMR or varicella for any of my kids (6,4,2). my dr doesn't love it, but he has let me decide every time, which i appreciate.

    ditto this.

  • DD has had all of her vaccines, but she gets them one at a time (which means extra trips to the doctor's office, but I'm fine with that) with a few days in between each one.  She's not getting any vaccines at her 15-month checkup.  Did your daughter not get vaxed at 12 months?  I'm just trying to figure out which vaccines she would be getting.  And, yes, the MMR did make me nervous, even though I know the doctor who did that study has been discredited.  DD did not have any reaction to it except crying - I guess it was a painful shot.  :(
