WWYD??? re pet

Our cat is 11 and a half, has a nasty temperment to anyone but MH and myself (including the kids... they are afraid of her), and has recently started pooping every once in awile on the floor.  Her litter box is clean.  She has food and water.  She doesn't lack for care.  I can't deal with crap on my floors!  Really, I'm just waiting for her to die but I don't have a good reason to put her down.  So how do I stop the pooping?  And would you put her down?

  • Yeah your gonna get eaten alive for this. I'd re word it and ask on the pet board, they are really helpful and nice.

  • I would give her to someone that will find out why she is pooping on the floor and then treat it medically. Cats can live 20 years or more so 11 isn't really that old. If you feel like you can't handle her for another 10 years, I would give her to someone who will. These things can happen with pets. If you don't want the risk of that, I wouldn't get any more pets in the future.
  • Ugh.  No I would not put her down.

11 is young for a cat.  Usually cats that seem mean and have litter box issues are actually extremely stressed out or sick.  There are easy things you can do.  First take her to the vet and have the senior blood panel done even though it is a little costly.

The best things for stress imo are feliway plug ins, creating kid-free areas for your cat, giving the cat a cat tree and/or other high perches.

For the litter box issues, keep the box super clean, consider adding another box, and try some cat attract litter.

If these things don't work after a few weeks, talk to your vet about prozac.  It is inexpensive and they make one you can just rub on her ear.

  • Have no fear she is our last pet for a long time.  My kids are not fans of animals and we move every three years and it's too hard to do so with a pet.

She is MEAN.  Bites ankles, hisses at everyone, lunges at the kids as they walk by.  If a stranger trys to touch her she attacks.  REALLY bad temperment.  No one is going to adopt her.  And she's been this way her whole life (we've had her since she was 5 weeks old).

  • Try the feliway plug in.  My cat's attitude improved dramatically on it.

I agree with this. It could really help. If it doesn't, then I guess it's your call. I wouldn't want a cat that was attacking my child either but euthanasia wouldn't be my first instinct or plan of action by any means.
