Breastfeeding

Question: Class, and book recos

I was considering taking a breastfeeding class but wasn't sure if it was really worth the time and/or money. Have any of you gone through a class? What were your thoughts? Did it help?

Also, are there any good books that you thought were extremely helpful to prepare you for BFing?

I apologize as I'm sure these questions have been asked before... I didn't see any recent posts on the board.

TIA!

  • I thought the bf'ing class was helpful.  If you can, take your DH so that he gets a little information about it.  I don't know that I retained a ton of information, but after the baby came, things came back to me.

I liked The Nursing Mother's Companion.  I've heard other people recommend "So that's what they're for."

  • You should take the class just to get familiar with breastfeeding. Also maybe they can give you the name of a lactation consultant to have on hand. I touched base w mine when I was pregnant via phone and then had her come to my home PP day 4 and again at week 5ish and both visits were extremely helpful. I read the womanly art of breastfeeding. Good luck!
  • thanks ladies I will check out those books!!

I mentioned the class to DH and he said "why would I need to go? I can't help in that department." LOL

  • DH will actually be your main help in that department.  His support will mean the most in the beginning while you're figuring things out.  He'll be able to help you position baby, bring you snacks and water, put something under your feet, hand you the remote, etc.  Don't let him off the hook so easily.

If you don't want to spend the $ on a class (I didn't, and they didn't fit our schedule), I found the Laugh and Learn about Breastfeeding DVD at my library.  It's by Sheri Bayles, and it's excellent.  DH watched it with me, so we both knew what to expect.  She also has one for Childbirth and one for Newborn care.  She has a great sense of humor, and makes the info really easy to understand.
