Possible strep - call OB or PCP?

I think I might have strep throat... ugh!  Last night it hurt so bad I couldn't talk.  It's a little better today, but I think I still need to be seen.

Should I call my OB or my regular dr?  I don't think it matters but have never dealt with this while pregnant.  I'm leaning more towards my regular dr, but wanted to see if anyone here has had this yet.  They both open at 8, so I'll have a wait a little to call.

Any thoughts?

Re: Possible strep - call OB or PCP?

  • I just got over being sick with Bronchitis which almost turned into pneumonia! It was horrible..I first called my OB and told her my symptoms and asked her what antibiotics were safe to take...she gave me a list and told me to call my family dr. right away (they get especially worried because they dont want it to turn into pnemounia) went in to see my regular dr. and she prescribed me an antibiotic. Even though your regular dr. will know what meds are safe during pregnancy, I still felt better talking to the OB first and getting her list of safe meds. Good luck I hope you feel better! It is horrible being sick and pregnant, I was in bed for 3 days!

  • Strep has to be tested with a throat culture. Call your OB to get a list of safe antibiotics. Then, call your PCP. Strep is something you don't mess with. If they can't get you in today, go to an urgent care clinic. If you've ever had a reaction to penicilin or any of its substitutes, like amoxicilin, TELL THEM. Strep is often treated with straight penicilin.

  • Ugh being pregnant and sick SUCKS BIG TIME!  I'm on day 3 of a horrible cold right now!  I would call your ob, just to let them know, and they can advise you if you need a strep test or not.  Hopefully you feel better soon!!!!!!

  • My OB always tells me if it's not related to something "below the belly button", to call my PCP.

They'll send the report to the OB if you ask them to. :-)

Good luck...hope you feel better soon.
