Breastfeeding

cluster feeding

DS is 2 weeks old and this past week he started cluster feeding (1/2 on 1/2 off for ~4-5 hrs). while not ideal compared to his previous every 2-3 hrs feed, the worst part is that this is starting when we try to go to bed. so it's been 7-8pm until midnight/1am. does anyone know if there is a way to dissuade the cluster feeding or at least shift it to earlier in the evening?

edit: I wake DS for feedings if he sleeps 3+ hr during the day.

Re: cluster feeding

  • Congrats on the LO and making the choice to breastfeed your LO! Cluster feeding are just a phase that baby go through. It usually does last maybe 2 or 3 days. My LC told me it was a normal part of the baby growing. Good Luck and hang in there :-)

  • My LO did this right around 2-3 weeks too.  Her feedings were also in the early evening.  She'd want to nurse almost hourly between 5-10.  It was frustrating b/c I could barely eat dinner or do anything else until she finally went to bed, but it didn't last very long.  And it meant that she was pretty full and would sleep 4-5 hours.  Just remember, this too shall pass!
