Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Refuses to sit!

Anyone else having this problem?  My baby is 7 months now and refuses to sit.  She can sit with her hands propping her for a little while - but quickly she gets mad, arches her back and straightens her legs.  She has not yet sat independently.  She loves to stand though while being supported and has great back/leg tone.  Just getting frustrating here - if she'd only be willing to sit she can better entertain herself.....

Re: Refuses to sit!

  • sorry - no help here...DS has been sitting on his own for a while now. he now goes from laying on his back to then tummy then pushing up to sitting.

i'm sure it's fine...it's like the kids that go from laying down to walking.......no rhyme or reason!

  • Our daughter is the same! Although she has been army crawling for over a month. We place her sitting down and she gives us a look like "are you serious?" and then proceeds to crawl.

  • This is my son! Although, he refuses to stand too. He would rather jump! He has been rolling around the room since four months, gets up on all fours, rocks and kind of bunny hops across the floor. He can sit for a few seconds, but then tries to grab anything, arches his back, squirms to get back on the floor.

I'm a little worried, especially when seeing what other babies his age or younger can do, but I'm just trying to go with it and let him hit his milestones in his own time.

I do know other Mommies think about him the same way though because he's been saying Maamaaa with identification for a month, baba for bottle, responding to his own name since five months and just this week Dada for DH. So, I think he's moving faster in the verbal area.

    Babies are just so different.

  • same here...the doctor wasnt concerned so we arent.

  • This weekend, I realized that my daughter can stand (holding onto an object--toy, rail, table, etc) longer than she is able to sit for. Obviously we put her in that position, but she has no problem standing supported for a few minutes. (except when something excites her and she lets go!)

  • My DS will be 8 months on Sunday and still can't sit independently.  Funny thing is, though, he crawls and even tries to pull up.  No sitting yet, though.  I'm not that worried, though, because I've heard that babies with big heads tend to sit up later and Gabriel has an enormous noggin, lol.  I'm sure he'll do it when he's ready.

  • DS is like this.  He has the ability to sit on his own, but would much rather be laying down so that he can roll around and get places.  We had pictures taken yesterday and he actually sat for her for a littlw while, I was amazed.

It will come with time, just keep trying! Can you distract her while she's sitting?

  • Don't sweat it. My DD was just over 10 months (a day over 9 months adjusted) when she sat independently for the first time. It just "clicked" one day. Ironically, it was four hours after a pedi appt where they asked if she was sitting yet, I said no, and they said not to worry.

  • I think all baby's have their ups and downs.  Everyone is different.  Mine hates to sit up as well.  He is 6 months and we've been trying to get him to sit up in his boppy chair  and even just try sitting him on on the couch etc but he always gets really fussy and too arches his back to lay down but then when we lay him down he wants to roll over onto his tummy but then he gets fussy as well on his tummy pretty quickly...It seems like he just either likes to be held or standing on his own with our help of course.  Heck wish he could just walk I think he would be one happy camper heehee
  • You describe my baby exactly!  Thanks everyone for the reassurance.  I hope she'll sit soon - but may just end up that she cruises instead.  It sure would open a door to a lot of ways to keep her entertained!
