Cipro for UTI

I can't take anything in the "cillin" family because of allergies so my OB prescribed Cipro.  She said it was safe for BF but when I checked my usual sources (kellymom, Dr. Hale, AAP) it seems like the recommendation would really be an alternative antibiotic.

Anyone else take an anitbiotic other than penicillin or amoxicillin for a UTI while BF?  I think I may call on Monday for an alternative antibiotic.  I just don't feel comfortable taking the Cipro, especially since DS is just two weeks old.

Re: Cipro for UTI

  • I took Cipro for a UTI when DD was 6 weeks old. I thought kellymom said it was approved? You're right that the cillin family is listed as lower risk, but since you're allergic I think Cipro seems like a good bet. I only had to take it for 3 days and I didn't see any issues with LO during. Hope you feel better soon!
