Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone not using wire hooks on the tree this year because of baby?

I started to decorate the tree and put on a few balls and the hooks freaked me out, they just scream choking hazard to me as do the little tip/lids to the ball ornaments.   We already have an almost 2 year old dog that is still like a puppy and chews EVERYTHING so I can just see both her and DD getting hold of a hook.  I was able to put on lot's of ornaments that just have string or ribbon but there are no balls on the tree.

Is anyone else changing the way they decorate the tree this year because of baby?   DD is so active, standing and crawling all over the place. She has a play yard area but it's almost to the point we should stop using it and she wants more free range :)

  • Could you put your tree in the play yard?  I put mine in my DD's pack-n-play.  It's not ideal, but our tree is small and I didn't want to spend the next couple of weeks trying to keep her out of it.  It sure is fun having a tree with a very active LO!

  • Our tree is small and on a table. However, our little one isn't crawling.

  • We have the tree and the train set behind a superyard playyard because DS is crawling so everything tree-associated is a hazard. We did still use our regular ornaments on the tree, though!

  • No, but only because Anna is not mobile yet.  So that works out for us this year!

  • We set up our tree just like normal. Its in the dining room not the living room, but we have an open floor plan so it might as well be in the same room. J really isn't all that interested in it. He's gone up to it a couple of times, but he generally leaves it alone. FYI- He's very mobile!!! I am actually shocked at how little interest he has in it. I thought for sure we would be taking down the tree by now! Maybe your LO won't pay it any mind. Merry Christmas everyone! :)

  • We didn't change anything this year.  Although LO is crawling, she has zero interest in the tree.  Next year we may baby-proof a bit more.

  • I didn't use hooks and put baby friendly ornaments on the bottom branches, but decorated like normal otherwise.  He goes over and tugs on the ornaments sometimes, but loses interest pretty quickly.

  • I threaded the oraments on a ribbon and wrapped it around the tree like garland.  No hooks in my house!

  • Our tree is in a corner with the loveseat and sofa on the walls next to it and we put the coffee table up against the two so she can't get to it (our play yard hasn't arrived yet)...I realize this is a little confusing, so I've added this picture.  It has worked perfectly for us (except for the one time she realized she could squeeze thru the area with the table legs...I put a pillow there and she hasn't figured out that she just has to push it out of the way, thankfully.

  • Only a couple of our ornaments need wire hooks and I just hung them up high.   I've been doing that for the past several Christmas...not because of the hooks but because they are the more fragile ornaments.   This way the dog and the kids can't get at them.

You could also just buy some ribbon and string it through the hoop on the ball instead of using a hook.
