She's a bit of a fussy bottle eater to begin with especially in the morning. It could be a number of things like:
1. pharmacist said any antibiotic can cause nausea and lack of appetite
2. recently switched from rice cereal to oatmeal in her bottles to see if it would help with constipation and maybe she doesn't like the oatmeal in the bottle (FYI, she never had an issue with the rice cereal constipating her, she has been on it since she was 5 weeks old and used to have normal poops before solids).
3. She is on antibiotics for a spider bite and an ear infection. the first day I was able to give her the antibiotic in a little nipple medicine bottle mixed with a tiny bit of formula to thin it out, or I would be a dose of meds her bottle, DH wonders if I ruined it for her. She is a baby that HATES meds and has a sensitive gag reflex and doesn't do well taking meds straight up through a syringe.
I haven't added any meds to formula today and we took out the oatmeal. She only ate 12 ounces today which stresses me because they want her to drink and eat lots with the meds. Again, she has always been a bit picky with the bottle, in the mornings she will not eat more than 2-3 ounces, that is a routine for her. She will take baby food. We've tried 3 different types of sippy cups etc. I finally started giving her pedialyte out of a cup and with a syringe!
Has your baby ever had eating issues while on an antibiotic? DD is on sufla I think (SMZ-TMP)?
Some days more than others I sure do wish these babies could talk and tell us what's up!
Re: DD doesn't want a bottle, could it be the antibiotics?
DD is on antibiotics right now and has diarrhea and she lost her appetite. I'm sure the antibiotic has a lot to do with this. I've been feeding DD with a syringe.
First, even though you didn't add the meds to the formula, I certainly hope you still gave it to her somehow.
Yes, it could be issues with the antibiotic or just the infection in general. When Marcus was "off" recently, we went to the pediatrician and determined it was likely a virus. However, when I mentioned that he, like your DD, was not taking his bottle well (he's drink a bit then push it away), he said that his stomach was probably upset.
He said not to worry about the food as long as he kept having a regular number of wet/dirty diapers.
Hang in there.
