HELP! ipad, nook tablet or kindle????

"Santa" says that we can get some sort of smartphone and tablet for christmas. I am at a total loss. Originally I was looking at Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet, but when looking at all the learning and speech apps(proloquo2go, etc) they are mostly built for an iOS operating system. So either an ipad or iphone....

Are there good apps out there for the cheaper nook and kindle or do we have to bite the bullet and get an ipad? Ugh.

And, to add another option into the mix, "Santa" will thow in a smartphone if we go the nool/kindle route. No smartphone if we go the ipad route.....Any ideas???

Thank you for any advice you can give.....

  • IMHO, I would go with an iPad, simply because I've found the range of therapy apps developed for them is superior to that developed for the android based devices.  What do you intend to use it for?
  • Now I am leaning towards an iPad or iPhone for that exact reason. All of the SN apps seem to be in iOS. proloquo2go specifically says they are sticking with iOS and not developing for additional platforms.

I think I would get more personal use out of an iPhone, but am also thinking that the size could be limiting for what Nate could do on it. He really needs some fine motor skills(i.e. pointing) help along with speech apps....Ugh! I hate deciding on technology...

  • A lot of the ones that I use (the dexterity app specifically) is also iOS as well.  Another thing to consider is that they make some great cushioning sleeves for the iPad that I haven't seen for the iPhone.  They use them at our preschool and we've yet to have an iPad destroyed :)

this!  We bought an android based one first ourselves and took it right back...bought the ipad and WOW!  we have been so pleased.  DD is playing on it right now as a treat after dinner.  Apps are so easy, everything from itunes syncs effortlessly and the machine itself is so well designed.  Couldn't be happier!

  • Check out the HP Touch pad.  They were going to discontinue them but they have decided to continue supporting.  It runs Android, has great reviews and is half the price of an ipad.

  • I'd get an iPad.

  • If it's more for him, ipad. I haven't put SN kind of apps on, yet, but the standard toddler apps like painting and puzzles are very cool. It's also a sanity saver. ;) Its how I buy a few minutes to put my youngest to bed.

  • PS -- tell Santa you can probably get a lower priced reconditioned (used) one. Ask the apple store.

I would recommend an iPad. I teach special education (moderate-severe) k-2 and we have iPads in my classroom. The kids love them and they are a great educational tool- they have so many different apps that focus on fine motor skills, speech, academic, even apps that use ABA! They are amazing. The iPhone is difficult for kids with fine motor issues to use because of the smaller screen. If you get an iPad they sell covers for them called "Otters"  which makes them water proof and pretty much indestructible!  image

Sorry- I have no idea what happened to the beginning of my post!

  • I'd definitely get an ipad. I'm having trouble remembering for sure, but doesn't Nate have vision issues? There are a lot of apps for people with low/no vision. The list for apps for children with deafblindness speaks to how cool of a product this is to be able to reach children with dual sensory losses. DDs are super into the one our DB coordinator has been bringing--way more responsive than on my iphone (bc of her vision) so we're planning to buy one soon.

    Have fun!

  • Thanks everyone for your input! It looks like I will be recommending to Santa that he get an ipad. I only wish I would have thought about this and decided earlier. It would have come in handy for the 2 hour plane trips we are taking for the holiday tomorrow.

MommyG:Thanklfully, we have been able to put aside our vision diagnosis. His macula finished developing by 14 months. He does still have some residual nystagmus, but it is very slight and intermittant.
