Nausea help!

I agree with somebody who posted that it's nice that we are going through the first trimester around the holidays because it tends to go by faster...but my nausea/vomiting has kicked into FULL force starting this week (mostly queasiness during the day and finally vomited last night), and I have so much to do this week! What has helped people with nausea? Any specific products (preggo drops?)? I know Zofran works pretty well, but I can't get into my doc to get a script, and I'd rather try something non-medicinal first.

Sometimes I really hate operating a side baking business...I have huge orders due today and tomorrow, and the smells are overwhelming Ick!

Re: Nausea help!

  • Before having to resort to Zofran (which has been an absolute god-send, BTW) I was taking Emetrol. It worked pretty well some days, other days my nausea/vomiting was wayyyyyy too overwhelming for any sort of help. I found it right in my pharmacy, it's a liquid anti-nausea similar to cola syrup and you can take a tablespoon or so every 1-2 hours. I kept it in my purse and would take a swig from the bottle any time I felt a little queasy. Yes, I am a classy pregnant woman.

As the PP said, ginger ale helped sometimes as well as keeping saltine crackers with me at all times, too. It's so hard to try to eat when you feel so sick but snacking on the crackers throughout the day was helpful, too.

  • Clementine Oranges have saved me. They are super little and easy to peel so I just keep some at work and here at home and literally eat one every few hours. It's really about the only thing that makes mine go away. I was on Zofran but it made my constipation a bazillion times worse.

I second the Clementines.  I've been eating about 4 a day and they help keeping me hydrated.  Also, I find sipping Coke throughout the day helps.  My last pregnancy NOTHING worked and Zofran was my only savior.

I didn't think you could take Emetrol when pregnant?  Not saying you're wrong, it could just as easily be me that's wrong.  Did your doc say it was ok?

  • UGH, sorry, I don't know why my computer keeps double posting!  And it won't let me delete one either...

  • Honestly, the only thing that has truly helped me is eating every two hours.  When I don't, I fall apart.  Tart things are pretty wonderful, like pickles.  I've found sucking on a cough drop can help, too.

As far as the sea bands go, eh...  I've thrown up with them on.  I still try other little things, but it's all about staying fed for me.

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions! I just ate a plain toasted bagel with light butter from Manhattan Bagel like I've never eaten before...and it was delicious. Nausea is gone for now, and I have a whole thing of clementines that need to be eaten soon so I'll be trying that trick too!

  • Also, try a combo of B6 and unisom, crackers, cold drinks, eating small amounts, not getting too hungry.  I tried the sea bands but after 12 hours I think they were pressing on my nerves and causing pain in my hands so those didn't work for me.  I finally resorted to zofran after the nausea kept waking me up for hours.  If you decide to go with zofran (which is wonderful for relief), just call the RN and they can get a script for you.

  • Preggie pops at babies r us. Not the actual lollipops, but the the little hard candies. They are a little bit sour ,so they aren't too sweet to increase nausea. I sucked on two in row,and it helped alot, and now one does the trick. Also, slushies have really helped me as well.

I 100% agree!!! I have to eat every two hours like clockwork before 4 pm! After I can go every three hours. lol. I have to start with a light breakfast-- like toast and gingerale-- and a couple saltines isn't enough for me either-- I have to have around 150 to 250 calories.

  • Along with the previous suggestions of eating small, frequent meals and finding your perfect snack food, I found mints to be really helpful. My ms started picking up drastically around 8 weeks and by 9, I was nauseous no matter what I did or ate. Mints definitely helped uh, stem the tide, so to speak, but just experiment and do what you can to stay full. I'd eat crackers at my desk all morning, really slowly, one at a time and that at least kept me from losing it at work. Fruit has been helpful, too. I can't get enough smoothies.

Good luck! Hopefully it'll start easing up for you soon!
