Breastfeeding

Feeding Nutramigen for 24 hours :(

We are going to feed DD hypoallergenic formula and I will pump for 24 hours to see if she has a milk protein intolerance.  Poor thing has such tummy issues and is messing with my supply as it is, so hopefully the pump will actually help (she was taking small feeds. Her tummy troubles have been going on since week 3 or so, but became pretty bad after her vaccines.  Pedi thinks her current issues (worse than normal) might be a reaction to the oral Rotavirus vaccine.  But may be milk protein.  I just cut dairy out for the 2nd time (didn't see any improvement the first time).  Why do I feel like such a failure? On the one hand, if we get good results from this, I know what is wrong and can fix it.  But I really don't want it to be dairy.

Re: Feeding Nutramigen for 24 hours :(

  • This is probably something you have already looked into, but could her gas/tummy issues partly be related  to only eating small amounts at a time?  For instance when they BF for cmall amounts of time, they are only drinking mostly foremilk?  This can cause tummy issues and fussiness.....Im mentioning this because DS#1 had a TON of tummy issues and was fussy and he was a grazer when it came to feeding sometimes

    green poopies?

    blood in the stool?

eczema? extra spit up, miserably crying baby?

if blood in stool probably milk protein issue, but rotavirus vac does mess up a lot of babies lately.

although often an oversupply with a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance can show very very similar issues--usually not blood in stool but unchecked it can show as that after weeks go by without things improving.

Blood and extra fussiness:( And diarrhea...no curds and very liquidy/slimy poop. Not green though and I know there isn't an oversupply anymore. Used to be though. Her crappy eating since the tummy issues got worse has decreased my supply.

did you go weeks of no dairy in the past?

if so it could be soy, nuts, eggs, or a whole laundry list of other items.

nutramigen still contains dairy, it's just processed so that a lot of babies can deal with it better.  some babies still react to that dairy.

with blood in stool I understand your want to try something bigger and better.

I would make the immediate switch to dairy and soy free (kellymom has lists, look at whole foods, earth balance "butter", rice, almond, or coconut milk and ice cream for suggestions)

I would worry that the short time on the formula will convince you to wean to formula, you will stop pumping and in a few days to a week baby will begin to have issues with the formula.  that would be miserable.

I did 18 days of no dairy (obvious or hidden) and didn't see any difference. Then, I think it was oversupply b/c I really had one and had for weeks. Poor baby was gaining 3 oz/day! Then we regulated it and were still having gas pain/issues. Then I added dairy back and 10 days later, we had blood in poop and extra fussiness. Started 1 day after vaccinations, too...and she did get a 100.4 fever from them. I suspect Rtoavirus vaccine, honestly.

And don't worry about weaning...I am very sad that I am not nursing her right now. It hurts my heart and I can't wait for this experiment to be over. In all honesty, she has affected my supply so much with barely eating that I think the pumping might help and I am focusing on that. She starts daycare in a few weeks, so this will give me some milk for day 1.
