104 Fever

Do last week my DD had her 15 mo pedi visit and got her mmr, then on tuesday or this week she got her penetcel vaccine. For the past 4 night she has had a fever, and tonight it peaked at 104. I have the aweful pit in my stomach over it. Just gave her some motrin and it came down to 103. I am terrified that she is going to have a febrile seizure.

She has always been a kids to get high fever but this just suxs!

Re: 104 Fever

  • I would call the pedi (and I never call the pedi).  104 is uncool.  103 with Motrin is uncooler.

  • Call pedi or go to urgent care. It may or may not be related to the vax but either way it needs treated.

  • I would call pedi too.  My DS just had a high fever like that and it didn't come down with Motrin.  He had pneumonia and I think he was dehydrated.  Push the fluids!  Even have your LO suck a wet washcloth.

  • did you give her the dose on the bottle or the dose based on her weight?

because the dose on the bottle is HIGHLY underdosed and probably isn't enough to be effective.

As others have said call the pedi.  However, a high fever is no indicator of a febrile seizure.  Temperature has nothing to do with it.  It's all genetics.  A child who has the genetic indicator for febrile seizures can have them ANYTIME their body temperature is elevated.  It's nothing to do with how high or how fast the temperature climbs.

DS frequently (about every 2 weeks) gets fevers of about 104-106.  He's never had a febrile seizure.

Agreed. There are a ton of resources online that say febrile seizures have to do with super high fevers. DS has had several. His pedi and pediatric neurologist both said that's more of an old wives tale than everything. They used to think that but now see that's totally not the case. They now think it's related to genetics and any increased fever (even 100.1 could lead to it). If you and your partner didn't have febrile seizures as babies there's a good chance he won't either.

  • I agree with the other pp my son had febrile seizures even if his temp only reached 99.9 so how high a fever is has nothing to do with the fever. That being said our neuro said that a child is more likely to have a febrile seizure if his/her temp. is over 103 for an extended period of time and there is a genetic factor.
