4 day wait rule on new foods?

When can you stop waiting 4 days between introducing new foods?

  • We never followed this rule at all. It's up to you.

  • At our pedis recommendation, we never followed this rule either.

  • Since we have no history of food allergies our pedi said we didn't need to follow that rule.  So I'd say if there are no allergies in your immediate family you can stop whenever you'd like.  We do the samples at costco all the time with Chloe so sometimes she get's 5 or 6 different foods in one day.

  • I don't do the 4 day wait exactly, but I do follow the only 3 new foods in one week rule. DH has allergies, so it seemed like the smart thing to do.

  • I've never waited 4 days.

  • We did the same food 2 days in a row.  We have no family history of allergies though.
  • On most foods we waited 2-3 days until he was 7 months old. Now we usually just wait a day or so between new things. It gets a bit harder to wait now, since most of his foods have multiple fruits/veggies/grains in them. They only things we will be cautious with are things like dairy products, strawberries, honey, shellfish, and nuts in the future. I have a milk allergy, my sister has a nut allergy, and my brother has a shellfish allergy. We will definitely wait a week or so between introducing those items, but he still won't even get those things until he is older.

  • Our pedi told us to wait a week before new foods--and it wasn't so much on allergies, but just getting them used to the taste of it.

And in some ways I can see it. It took about 4 days for my daughter to warm up to applesauce. (she didn't refuse it, just made an odd face). Now it is her favorite food.

I am wondering if I added another food in, she may not have warmed up to the applesauce. We give her purees though--and this week is the last week of really trying new foods. (she has had green beans, peas, carrots sweet potatoes, squash, pears, bananas and apples) Now we are onto peaches.

  • We have no allergies in our families, so we didn't bother with this rule.

My Pedi's nurse told me the same thing - but I don't follow it since DD usually loves any food :) I do wait a few days at least before introducing a new food.
