Have any of you experienced this? I'm already considered HR bc my son was born 10 weeks early due to pPROM/PTL. In August, I had my first abnormal pap ever, severe dysplasia. I went through the colposcopy, biopsy followed by a leep...My dr just called me today and said my pap was abnormal again but this time not as severe....I'm already freaked out enough, now I have this added to my plate. Advice would be great. Since I'm pregnant, I guess the plan is just to have another pap in march....![]()
Oh and she never told me if I was + for hpv or not...I'm assuming I was bc of the dysplasia...but can't say for sure....
Re: Can we talk about LEEP and abnormal paps?
I was diagnosed with severe dysplasia and had a LEEP. I moved and switched OBs, and six months later, it was back, and I had cervical laser ablation. Six months after that, it was back and I had another ablation. Since then (about 3 yrs since that last one), I have had clear paps.
I am now on bed rest due to an incompetent cervix, which I assume is connected to the procedures. My OB does the albations because she believes it is less damaging than a LEEP. Either way, I don't regret treatment, because cervical cancer is worse than bed rest. Since you are pregnant, I would assume any sort of treatment would occur after delivery. Plus, you may be all clear by March. Just be diligent about getting paps!
I had an abnormal last year, had colposcopy, another pap and never heard anything from that so I assumed that everything was fine. Well, found out I was pregnant so I had to switch doctor because mine didn't do babies. My new dr did a pap on me, because she wanted one for her own records and because the last one had come back abnormal too...uhhh, thanks old dr for letting me know that and doing something about it. Anway, new dr did pap and it came back abnormal too, but not as bad. Mine is HPV, which freaked me out and made me feel "dirty" to begin with but after research and dr talking to me, I know it's very, very common. Anyway, she said that in a lot of cases, your own body will fight it off, but because of my immune system being low because of being pregnant that it may not. We're not "doing" anything about it right now because of the pregnancy because the risk is greater than the HPV is right now. We're going to re-evaluate after he's here, but she thinks me going into labor and delivering will put my body into overdrive and it will fight off the HPV on it's on and it will be gone. If not, she's going to do the colposcopy again and go from there...trying to stay away from other procedures if she can because of the complications that can happen if I were to get pregnant again. I wish you the best of luck. I think me getting pregnant and having to switch dr was the best thing for me as my other dr seemed pretty incompetent with the whole thing...they didn't even call me for 4 months after the first one came back abnormal. I really like my new dr and will stick with her after this baby is born. She seems to have my best interest in mind, hopefully your's does too.
My LEEP was done in '99 and all paps have been normal since then. In relation to my pg however, have been getting add'l cervical scans due to the LEEP since week 11, every 3 weeks until week 24 when I went into PTL, then cervical exams every week since. The OB and MFM were overly cautious from the beginning due to the LEEP - if I so much as mentioned I felt crampy they made me come to the ofc right away to get checked out. Like PP, I did end up on bed rest for PTL but have made it this far with a closed cervix. Good luck and be sure you make those follow up appts!
Your OB should keep an eye on your cervical length with this pregnancy post-LEEP. It's a major predictor of an IC anyway, but with the short time between the LEEP and your pregnancy, your cervix may not have had a chance to recover. I had a LEEP in 2004 and had a preventive cerclage with both pregnancies. Good thing too-- once it was removed, my cervix immediately dilated to 5cm.
You might want to see if your OB will do a preventive cerclage now-- I have a toddler too and I can't imagine being on bedrest (or something worse) because of an IC.
