Umm, most people try their best to keep mice out of their house! It gives me the chills to think about walking into my kid's room and seeing them playing with one.
Rats actually make great pets. They're very smart and extremely docile if hand raised. I've never had rats because I don't like their particular musk but they're very sweet pets.
PP is right. They are great pets. I would have never thought that if I didn't work in a pet store.

As a kid I had pet rats. I actually had two and so did my sister... turns out what we thought were four girls was two girls and two boys... man those babies reproduce faster than rabbits! We ended up having to get rid of them just because they kept on multipling; I was sad.
Re: The things you find on craigslist (nbr)
Rats are awesome pets. The males have so much personality and they are affectionate. Pretty cool to teach them tricks too..Perfect starter pets!
I developed an allergy to rodents recently, but I think I would still let my daughters have them if they'd like.
