Preemies

ZANTAC may be bad for preemies

Hi moms,

My pedi just called and said to stop giving my daughter Zantac immediatly. She said that she gets emails from the American Assoc. of Pediatrics and that Zantac is now thought to cause gastric infections in premature infants. It might be a good idea to call your doctors and find out about this. I hate this! It was working well for my daughter.

Good luck!

edit- I said DH. It's about the baby, not him :-)

  • Hmmm....a few weeks ago R was switched from Zantac to Prilosec.  The nurse mentioned that they don't usually give preemies Prilosec and she wasn't sure why they made the change.  I wonder if this is the reason...

Could be! She is sending the baby to a g.i. doc and mentioned that she might put her on Prilosec

  • So scary!  I just googled and found the article.  https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/755230

I actually stopped the zantac a few days ago because of a horrible diaper rash and mucousy stools. It's clearing up now that we stopped the med.

  • DS is on both Zantac and Prilosec (sp) - on phone with pedi office now - thanks for posting this! EEK!
  • Our Neo said that they would not prescribe Zantac to Sophie until after her due date, even though she was having terrible Reflux while in the NICU.  He talked about the GI issues of preemies, but said it should be safe after she reaches her due date.

Our Pediatrician started her on Zantac a few weeks after her due date.

  • My pedi just put my son on Zantac last week and his due date was 2 days ago.  She assured me it's been used with babies for years and shown to be safe.  Did the article say how far premature or if it's ok once they're at/near term?  (the link didn't work for me).
