I didn't realize they were the "hot toy" this year, and I've been looking for weeks and can't find any. Anyone been successful? Do you mind sharing where and when you found yours? Any tips?
I planned to buy my daughter the Innotab from V-Tech from the moment I first saw them. (She already has the Mobigo and she enjoys it so sticking with V-Tech seemed a no-brainer; plus they were pricing $20 bucks cheaper than the LeapPad version.)
Having said that, I've been out doing Christmas shopping and I haven't seen them anywhere. Even the Innotabs have been sold out; I scooped the last one off the shelf at Toys R Us earlier this week. I think you may have luck by searching the big retailers' websites. There's typically a link you can click on that tells you if it's in stock and at which locations; that'll save you alot of running around. And if that doesn't work out, you may be able to get one online. (Try the Leap Frog website.)
They haven't been around much since just before Thanksgiving. My mom happened to catch one for us because she was at Walmart when one came off layaway. Phew!

(That is where I bought mine- granted it was seveal months ago- when you could find them. I wound up getting a free trial to B&N membership- knocked 11.00 off the Pad- and then used a 40% off educational toy coupon. So I paid 50.00 for it)
At this point, I think your only option would be to order one online. Problem is, when retailers like Target.com or Walmart.com get availability, they typically sell out within a few minutes. I've seen some go as quickly as 30 seconds!
Stores are still getting inventory, but they sell out within the first hour after opening. Our local Target stores have people lining up outside the door up 30min prior to opening with people just hoping they received a shipment in the night before! A couple weeks ago Toys R Us sent out an email to their customers saying that they were receiving leappad inventory the next morning and people were lining up outside of TRU stores hours before opening! It's just crazy!
I would consider picking one up after Christmas. What's kill the stock right now is resellers who are purchasing large amounts of leappads, typically through online sites, and selling them for a higher price on ebay. After Christmas, the demand will crash, and you'll probably see them on store shelves by January 1st.
I don't know if I read this here or somewhere else, but someone found them unexpectedly at Barnes & Noble the other day. I know not a lot of people automatically think of B&N when they're looking for toys, so I don't think they get discovered quite as fast. Might be worth looking into.
I ordered the one for Ben at the beginning of September not knowing they would be so popular. I wished I ordered a few more and now I could be selling them on Ebay for 2 times the cost and getting a little Christmas money...LOL! I would say online is your best shot, but you'll just have to be lucky and be on there when they post that they have a few more because they typically sell out in seconds not minutes.
