Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Need some serious pacifier help!

My LO is 9 weeks old and will not take a paci. He also doesnt suck his thumb. He only wants me and so I am his pacifier. He does great all day and then the late afternoon hits and he want to constantly suck. He will be happy for about ten min and then want to suck for up to an hour and it goes on and on...I know we are now in a habit because I hate hearing him cry so I give in and this is how our nights are. He is cranky unless he uses me. We do this for four to five hours every night. I dont know what to do. And I have a 2 1/2 year old who I feel bad for because I cant spend time with him when baby constantly wants me to suck....any help or advice??? Thanks!

  • Have you tried other objects?  At 9 weeks old your baby probably can't hold things themselves, but I would try a washcloth or lovey blanket...and maybe even keep introducing the pacifier??

I'm sorry I'm not much help but that's what I would try.

  • Have you tried different types of pacifiers?

My LO would only take MAM, all others she would spit right back out. They say MAMs are the easiest to keep in.

  • My DD won't take a pacifier for sucking anymore, but she loves to chew on and hug her WubbaNub (https://www.wubbanub.com/)... Maybe having the little animal attached to the paci will help by giving him something to hold onto?

  • We tried 6 different kinds before we found one DS would take. He ended up taking the round ones with the bulb-like tip. I think all the molded ones were hard to keep in his mouth.I included a link to the kind that worked for us. A lot of people don't try these - but they work really well for colicky babies.

Also ditto on the PP - you're going to have to train him to take it - he won't be able to keep it in very long at first - so you'll have to hold it there until he figures it out.

This was us exactly. I got all other types for baby shower gifts and she didnt like any of them. I bought the nuks cause they were the same shape as her bottle and is supposed to be similar to a nipple when they are sucking on it. She has been hooked ever since! She doesnt even want the bigger ones yet...

  • We also had to try a few different kinds before we found one that worked for DS. We started out with the Soothies, then Gumdrops, but he could not keep those in his mouth, plus the Gumdrops are heavy and they would fall out anyway. We tried the Nuk brand, but they seemed to be too long and he would gag each time I gave it to him. I finally bought some MAM's and that did the trick. He loved them and could keep them in his mouth. I bought several packages of them because they seem to disappear somehow. I would say just try out a few different brands and see if that works.

My niece and nephew would never take a paci though. My nephew is 7 months and my sister has tried several different kinds without any luck. Some babies just have no interest, but hopefully that isn't the case for you! GL!
