Grabbing/holding objects?

When do most babies start to reach for things and hold them? Like toys? My LO does it spontaneously, and holds into my shirt while she nurses, but when do they grab with purpose? Anyone's LO doing this?

Re: Grabbing/holding objects?

  • Jack is just now starting to bat at the toys hanging on his play gym. He'll grab onto my shirt or hand while eating, but I never counted that since it was just kind of where his hands fall naturally. If that makes sense. I'm anxious for him to start actually reaching for things!

  • Your LO is a lot younger than mine, so don't worry. Mine really has no purposeful intent to grab/hold. I usually put things in his hand and he doesn't hold on to it for very long. He loves his activity mat and bats at the hanging objects.

  • DS started intentionally grabbing and holding about a week before he turned 3 months old.  Now he's looking, grabbing, and shoving everything he can in his mouth!

  • I was wondering this too!  B definitely bats at toys and will reach out and touch things that interest her, but she isn't grabbing and putting things to her mouth yet.  She's much more in the grabbing stage, but hasn't yet gotten the whole holding onto stuff yet.

  • This post made me feel sooooooo much better, I was worried DS was behind because he doesn't really grab anything with purpose...only my shirt or hand when he is eating or snuggling.....so glad that is the norm!

  • LO just started this about 2 weeks ago, and now that she has figured it out all the little hanging toys seem to frustrate the *** out of her because she can's seem to get them down. It started slow, like she was trying really hard to grab something, and all of a sudden she is doing it all the time!

  • LO has been batting and grabbing at things more and more, but hasn't really grabbed objects and brought them to her mouth yet. One change we noticed just tonight-- she figured out that if she rolls onto one side, she can reach the higher up toys dangling from her activity gym. She's obviously a genius. ;)
  • DS is slowly starting to do this now.  Before he only grabbed for my hand, now he likes to grab his paci and tries to get the toys on his activity mat.  It's cute when he gets so frustrated that he can't get them!

  • Yesterday, she actually grabbed a toy with both hands and shoved it in her mouth. It was the first time I had seen her really do this with purpose. She's been kind of grabbing things for a few weeks, but it looked more accidental.
