Vaccinations

SO I am curious how everyone feels about vaccines for their newborns. My husband is very much against them, but I am torn.

Thoughts?

Re: Vaccinations

  • I'm pro-vaccine, however, we're holding off on Hep B until the 2 month appt.  I just don't see the need for LO to have it at birth and I'd like to wait until she's a little bigger to have it.  I used to work in peds and I've given literally tens of thousands of vaccines and I always hated poking little babies w/ thin thighs.

  • I am not against them completely, but she will definitely be on a delayed schedule for them. She will most likely not get the flu shot and any other optional ones for school.

  • Seems like awhile since this can of worms was opened on this board!

I believe in vaccinations and my LO will receive all vaccinations on the schedule recommended by the CDC.

Me: Stage II endo, borderline high FSH
    DH: perfect
    1 lap, 5 IUIs = 4 BFNs and 1 c/p
    2 IVFs, 2 FETs = 1 BFN, 1 c/p, 1 ectopic and finally a sticky BFP in May 2011!

  • I'm pro-vaccine and don't really understand why people would risk their children getting serious diseases that are preventable.
  • I have had this discussion with my mom. My DH is fine with whatever is required, as am I. However my mom is anti western medicine and anti vaccine. We had it out a few times while I was PG with DD. Bottom line was its our child our choice. But your situation is much harder because its DH.

Find out what his reasons are for being anti vaccine. If its because of all the "hype" going around, its time for him to do some real research. Perhaps you can find a nice compromise of the required Vacc Vs the "recomended" ones.

Some Vacc. are not required, but some are, and for the kids to go to DC, preschool and eventually school they will have to have certain things done, starting now, as infants.

  • Anything that is typical she will get, any other optional ones like flu etc I'm not so sure...

I have never gotten a flu shot and opted out of it now during my pregnancy as well. So not sure if I'll have my girl ever vaccinated for something like that...

  • I think we probably aren't going to do them. It's a very personal decision and everyone has the right to their own choice. And you can opt out in every state for religious reasons.

  • I think to not vaccinate is irresponsible and completely selfish.  I don't know why anyone would be against it, it protects your baby/child against contracting or spreading life altering, devastating disease.  I saw a woman downtown today, she had polio and now only has 1 leg.  My driver's ed teacher also had polio and can't use is arms properly anymore.  These are awful diseases and there are so many misconceptions out there.

I think its selfish not to because vaccines don't work for some people, and others may have a weakened immune system because they are trying to fight another health problem.  Then you go and expose your kid to these people who may now die because you chose not to have your child vaccinated and is carrying the disease or illness.

If your child gets sick, becomes handicapped or dies because YOU chose not to have them vaccinated how would you feel about that?  This is why I think it would be just as irresponsible as drinking a 40oz of JD every week during your pregnancy.  You child might get FAS, or they might not. Might get a disease or illness, might not, but why gamble with it?

This isn't directed in anyone in anyway, just how I feel about the whole issue in general.  If it was ONLY your child that would be affected, so be it, I wouldn't care so much, but when other people of society are affected by your decision I'll voice my opinion about it.  (Maybe this should have been a UO).

So to answer the question, yes my child will get all vaccinations on the recommended schedule.

  • I agree with everything that kitkat said.

And I am giggling at the "40 oz of JD" during pregnancy...40 oz usually refer to beer...liquor is referred to by pint, fifth, etc.  I'm guessing you haven't had a lot of Jack Daniels during this pregnancy huh?  Haha...I am just teasing you...I thought it was really cute:)

For real??  I've always only ordered pints of beer (but I did pronounce it wrong for about a year before anyone corrected me haha)  I always thought hard liquor came in 26, 40, or 66??   I even worked in a (ghost town) bar for a year haha!! Shameful!

Edited:  I think it must be a Canada/US thing.  Either way, I can't wait to get floor lickin' drunk again!!  Just get me doubles please :)

  • Hmmm....maybe I don't know what I am talking about!!!  I have never heard of a 40 oz of hard liquor, only 40's of beer...mostly 40's of Old E in rap songs, haha!  I always just order bottles of beer or shots of liquor.  Who knows...I could be wrong.  I often amStick out tongue

I completely agree with you.  Unfortunately I think a lot of people on people like  us to also help protect their children.  I have heard people say that with so many children being vaccinated that a certain disease is no longer a threat.  It blows my mind.

I am also curious to how people who don't vaccinate their children ever find daycare, schools, and even colleges that accept their children.

  • I question the intelligence of anyone who doesn't vaccinate their children.

I completely agree with this statement.  I would feel horrible if my child contracted one of those diseases (especially one that was nearly wiped out completely a decade ago) because I made the decision to withhold a vaccination.

Flu shot is touchy for some people too.  I've had it every year since high school and have never had the flu (I know, not always true for everyone, but glad I haven't).  I got it this round and so did my husband because he delivers narcotics to nursing homes for his job.  We treat it as though he was a nurse working at one of those places since he come into contact with the same people during his deliveries.   I also read that if you are BF, the flu shot immunities can be given to your baby, so that's kind of cool.

  • We do a delayed schedule. I'll let LO have the newborn vaccines, but we never do more than 2 at a time. With DS we held off on the MMR until he was well over 2. It meant taking him in a few times between long stretches of visits for just vaccines, but it was worth it to us. At 3 he's caught up where he should be.

  • We plan to vaccinate our baby with all the typical vaccines but will spread them out. I used to get seizures when I was an infant when I got more than one vaccine at a time. My mom had them give one at a time and I was fine. Our pediatrician said that could be hereditary so as a precaution we will split them up for our lo. We will not be doing optional vaccines like the flu shot. Dh and I have never gotten the flu shot so we will be passing on it for our lo as well.
