We just ended up getting her a cheapie P&S. For the same cost as a "kid camera" (~$50) we were able to get a much better quality camera that will last a lot longer than a couple years. And the pictures will be a lot better and we could actually use them if she managed to get some good one.
I'm not so worried about her dropping the camera (which would probably be the only reason to get a kid one) but I doubt she's going to be taking it outside on the concrete and I may try and find an otterbox-type case for it for additional protection.
I think it's a great idea to get an inexpensive p&s. We bought DD a toddler camera and not only does it suck, but she's never dropped it. I wish we'd thought to get a p&s!
