Anyone been through this process with their preschooler?
The Pre -K teacher seems to think he has trouble learning and should be held back and not start K in the fall. The 5 other parents that we know were told the same thing and we are beginning to wonder if they are just trying to up their enrollment numbers for next year since they don't seem to be full this year.
He passed K screening back in April and the lady that is doing the observation at the Pre-K school even said it was rare to have to observe a child who passed the screening.
Since Pre-K is optional how can you not be ready for K? What about all the kids who don't even go to Pre-K?
Just a fusterated parent.
Re: Preschool Observation and Evaluation
How old is your son?
I know for my almost 4 yr old, that we are holding him out of Kindergarten next year. Academically he is quite ready and already goes to a town/school run preschool & since our cut off is December 31st (his birthday is Dec 26th)... he should be going to kindergarten next year.
But I knew I was holding him out since he was born ; )
But, he does have speech issues and his school (we do not pay for it) has agreed with us that it is best we hold him out since speech and socially he is not ready (for him these seem to go hand in hand).
I brought him to a town preschool screening last February & that is when the town recommended his speech issues are no longer age appropriate & approved the program he is in. They would have pushed him for Kindergarten next year if he was ready since by law he could go. At the screening there were two families with Kindergarten ready kids and they were looking for advice on whether of not their son's were ready. Both of them were advised to go ahead and start Kindergarten this past fall.
I guess I should add that a lot of parents hold out Aug-Dec kids anyway in our area. That is normal here, but the schools will push them to start. As the parent I truly think you know your child best.
Ugh, not sure if this really helps you!
