If you bought a used pump...

I purchased a used medela pis and I am wondering what parts I need to replace? Will boiling to sterilize the parts clean them effectively or do I need to replace everything but the motor?  Thanks for your help!

  • You need new tubes.  You can sterlize and use the connectors, valves and flanges if you want, or buy new.  I think a complete new set of parts is like $10 though.  Those are the only parts you need to worry about.  You can't sterilize tubes, to my knowledge.

  • I purchased everything new for my pump. My hospital also gave me the set of parts that I used there, so be sure to use the hospital pump at least once.

I wouldn't trust sterilizing.... replacing everything will run you less than $35--it's worth it.

Ditto this! Even ask just to try out the pump and you get an extra accessory pack. The tubing for the Symphony (hospital pump) isn't compatible with the PISA, so you'll still need that. Although, looking at it, you could probably just cut off the pump end for it to work...

  • With a medela you need to replace everything but the motor. The PIS is an "open" system so it is possible for the milk to get into the tubes themselves. It's actually possible for the milk to get into the motor area too. Which is why medela pumps are genearlly not multi-use machines.

We received a used ameda pump and are using it, but it is a "closed" system so it's a little better in regards to multi-use.

You can, you just have to cut the adapters off the ends.  I had 2 sets of tubing from the hospital that I used with my PISA when I got home.
