Flat Head

My baby (11 weeks old)  tends to sleep with her head a certain way (head turned to the right). She may have a slight misshape, but I think I may be overreacting as no one else in my family thinks it is noticable. However she also turns her head to the right a lot during play time.

I am feeding her opposite arms, putting toys/interesting objects to her left side etc to help engage her. She doesn't seem in pain and she can turn to the left just fine. She just needs a reason to do it.

Is this normal?

Re: Flat Head

  • I really can't answer your question, but here is what I do...  My doctor told me to alternate the way I put her in her crib.  One day she is facing the window and the next day, her feet are facing it and so on.

  • Sounds like torticollis which is a tight sternocleidomastoid muscle in the side of the neck. This muscle rotates and tilts the head, if one side is tight you may need physical therapy to resolve the problem.

I went through this with DS # 1, I found that no one is going to tell you that your kid's head looks messed up. If you think there is an issue talk to you pediatrician. I have been using Bobby's Noggin Nest since Day 1 with the twins. DS # 1 needed 2 DOC Bands from www.cranialtech.com to resolve severe plagiocephaly (flat spot). (And people were telling me his head looked fine!) In his case the flattening was asymmetrical and affecting his face. If the flattening is symmetrical there is probably no need for concern and will resolve itself once you LO is not spending so much time lying down.

    Trust your gut!
