Babies: 6 - 9 Months

6 month weaning schedule?

I feel like all I do is feed our DD.  Besides breakfast, lunch, and dinner, how often are you giving breast or bottle feeds?  I BF in the morning before her breakfast, then sometimes, depending on length of AM nap give her a  5oz bottle before lunch.  Then usually a 5oz bottle in the mid afternoon and then dinner in the evening.  At night I will BF before bed or give her a couple of ounces.  Today she ate her lunch like crazy and then about 2 hours or so later was really fussy.  Tried to put her down but she just screamed.  So, I got her out of bed, made 6 oz and she took it all and then basically fell asleep.  She's been fussy lately and I wonder if she's getting enough.  However, I'm so afraid I'm overfeeding her!!  Help!!

  • Breast milk or formula should be the majority of a baby's diet at this age. They should continue to get it until at least a year old.

I only give my LO 1 meal of solids a day. Sometimes I give her a little snack before bed of oatmeal or purees. I nurse her often, about every 2 or 3 hours during the day and once (we just started only letting her eat once) at night. She usually has half a jar of purees for lunch and then nurses afterward. I really wouldn't be concerned about overfeeding her. It sounds like she needs more food if she is being fussy like that. Don't be afraid to let her have it. If you notice she isn't drinking it up and is just playing with it, then thats when you know she isn't hungry anymore. Also as she gets older, she will need to eat more.

  • My boys get 2 meals a day but still get about 28-30 oz of breastmilk on top of that.

  • My LO eats a ton of solids (3 meals a day), but he still BFs 6-7 times in a 24 hour period. I think at this age (and for many years to come), you feed them when they're hungry without concern for over-feeding. If you're not forcing a bottle on her or making her drink a certain number of ounces, it's really not possible to over-feed, IMO.

  • She might be going through a growth spurt. As for us, I BF once in the morning (well, technically twice, since I do one side and then the other an hour or so later), she gets two 6-7oz bottles at daycare, and then I BF twice more after she gets home and once more before she goes to bed. She also gets two "meals" of solids.
