How popular is Kate where you are?

I've been considering a name that would possibly get the nn Kate...how popular is Kate (and various spellings) where you are?

Re: How popular is Kate where you are?

  • I am in the South. I can think of only two childen under 3 with this name. One is Katie; the other's middle name is Kate.

I don't think Kate is all that popular. If you find that it is in your area, maybe you could find another nickname for the name you're considering or just not use a nickname at all.

  • I'm in FL and I'm the only Katie/Kate I know. I don't know any children with the name. I very rarely meet people with my name..although I know a few Kathy's.

  • Kate is super popular among my friends (ie: women my age) but I don't know any under the age of 5.

I really love the name Kate, and almost universally love all of the people I know with that name.

  • I'm in MA

my step daughters name is Katherine but we call her kate/katie

she is in kindergarten, she has atleast 3 other friends that are some combination of katherine/katie/kate

  • A girl I worked with just named her daughter this in August.
  • I know 8 billion Catherines, Katies and Caitlyns (with various spellings) but I've never met anyone IRL with the full name Kate.
  • I don't think it is too popular. I do know a few Katie/Kathy's. My friend has a 14 month old named Kate. But that is about it.

  • I know a bunch of Kates under the age of 5. And I've seen a few that include it in a double first name... like Anna-Kate and Emma-Kate.

BUT, my name is Kate so maybe I'm just sensitized to noticing it :)

  • I don't know too many little kids, so I don't know about that age group, but I'm a teacher and in the average middle school class in my area there will often be a Kate/Katie. All of them that I know of have it as short for something, whether that is Katherine, Kathleen, etc. I also know about 6 or 7 around my own age (mid-20s). I've never met anyone whose full name was just Kate.

  • I know a thirty-year-old Kate and a fourteen-year-old Kate (ie, their given name on their birth certificates is Kate).  I know several Kathleen/Kathys, a few Caitlins, a handful of Katies, but none who are kids.

Looking at my school directory (girls' school, 4-12, very affluent community), there are a total of 9 Katherine/Catherines, 3 Caitlins in various spellings, 3 Katies, 2 Kates, 1 each of Katya and Katerina.

  • I'm in the midwest and know a ton of Katie's but not any Kate's.  I have a friend that named her daughter Hailey Kate ______ and we usually call her Hailey Kate, not just Hailey. I love the simplicity of just Kate.  Really cute! :)
