It seems as though when my 10 day old nurses on the right side after about 5 mins it feels like she is using her tounge and flicking or playing with my nipple. How do I get her to stop this? That side is so sore right now from it. Also, both breasts hurt even to touch (the whole breast not just the nipples) not sure how to help that. They are not hard and engorged anymore thankfully but it still hurts even to lift my arms over my head. I did have to have surgery on both sides to drain and remove lumps over the last couple years and that is where it is most sore so not sure if that has contributed to this uncomfortable feeling. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Re: Nipple Flicking (not sure what else to call it)
The light sucking is her trying to trigger another let down - it's normal, so you probably can't change it. You'll get used to it, though. Use nipple cream after every feed and try to let them dry well before you put clothes over top.
Are you taking some ibuprofin? If you don't think anything is super-wrong (like an infection) and you're feeling otherwise well, pop an advil and see if it helps.

I found lanolin helped me. I did not like the Lansinoh brand - found it was too thick and hard to rub onto tender nipples. I found the Medela brand online (ebay actually) and bought the sample packs in bulk. Each 'sample' would last me 2-3 days. I would apply after every nursing session and after my shower. I still have a bunch stashed for the next go-round.
Edit to add: My daughter was born with a tooth thru the gums - very rare, I know. So I immediately had to deal with teething and biting. Lanolin saved me from occ. bleeding nipples from bites.
