Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Ear pulling

Is this automatically an ear infection or can it also be associated with teething?  LO just had an ear infection in October, but he's also teething like crazy right now.  He has his 9 month appointment on Friday, but just curious as to what others think.

Re: Ear pulling

  • My DS picked up that habit once he got his first two teeth...I don't know if you noticed with your LO if it was teething or not. Just my 2 cents! Whenever he gets teeth coming in, he gets a fever as a result and the ear pulling/scratching begins.

  • DS had an ear infection also back in October. He also plays with his ears and still does. The only reason I had him check for an ear infection is because he was waking up every hour screaming at night for 2 nights in a row (along with a cold). He hasn't had a cold since but still plays with his ear(s). He got his first tooth last week.

  • Chloe has been tugging her ears like crazy these last few days and she is teething.  She also pulls on her ears when she's tired.

Mine too.  She pulls on them when drinking her bottle, when she's sleepy, whenever the mood strikes her.

  • My little man tugs on his ears when he's VERY tired.  He's never had an ear infection and still doesn't have any teeth (which is driving me insane, he's a drool machine).  He just turned 8 mos if that helps.

  • I just read an article on this, so here's what they said...  It could be an infection, but look for other symptoms like a fever, fussiness, or nasal congestion.  It could be teething, again look for other signs.  Or, it could just be that LO just found his ear and thinks it's neat :)

Ditto. DD pulls/swats/pokes at her ears all the time, and it's usually just because she's tired.

  • I was told that ear pulling is a sign of teething.  V pulls on her ears all yhe time and has never had an infection.  She does however have 2 teeth.

  • Thanks, he just got his second tooth, so I'm thinking it's teething related.  Guess we'll see at his 9 month appointment tomorrow if it's anything more serious.
