Does anyone else's LO do this?

LO hangs out in the pack and play in our bedroom while I get dressed, and in the past few days he has started hurling himself backwards onto his back from sitting or kneeling. It makes a tremendous thud. He doesn't cry or whimper at all, and actually laughs, but it kind of freaks me out because he is making himself fall.

Is this normal?

Re: Does anyone else's LO do this?

  • Yep, usually when fighting nap time.

Wait until they start banging their heads into things out of frustration and create a big old bruise!

  • DH was convinced this was totally bizarre behavior and we should take him to the pedi. I answered (as I always do): "Let me check with the nesties."

    Thanks for the reassurances!

  • Totally normal. DS' favorite game is to stand on the couch and then DH or I will count to 3. On 3, DS will hurl himself backward onto the couch and laugh hysterically and then beg for us to count again and again.
  • sprout does this for fun too.  unfortunately he hasn't quite learned that the couch or crib surface is much different than wood floors.  poor guy.
  • totally normal. H would often do it in the midst of a tantrum.  she also randomly intentionally bangs her head on the floor, my knee, etc. which is always fun....

  • For us it was a very scary tantrum related behavior - DS would throw himself backwards without regard to his environment. It started around 15 months and continued until he got more verbal at close to 2. We learned to get into position to catch him if we needed to correct his behavior.

  • DS, one year, "dives" into his crib often, mainly when he's joking around.  Totally cute, nothing to be concerned about!
