Upstate NY Babies

X finally went to the doctor...

I spent most of my day yesterday at Albany Med- We met with the neuro pedi and they took xrays. It was so heartbreaking to hear him cry while they had the sandbags on him to keep him still and they had his head in this little vice...(I was crying and they wouldnt let DH in the room)

luckily, there is no bone malformation or damage so they are saying he has Torticollis and sending us to PT for now and I have to vigiliant about putting him on the opposite side.

We go back for a CT scan in the next couple weeks. They arent recommending a helmet or band at this time

I just wish I knew how and why this happened...

  • They wouldn't let me watch when B had his skull Xrays, that sounds so scary- I'm sorry!

Our PT says that the tort/plagio rise is due mostly to kids sleeping on their backs these days. The important thing is that SIDS is down but I guess mis-shapen skulls are seeing a significant rise. You PT will help you with strategies for repositioning. Our showed us how to safely use rolled washed cloths in the carseat and swing... things like that.

  • T has torticollis and some plagiocephaly as well.  T was born that way- he always looked to the right, right from birth.  They say he was probably just smushed in my uterus and it tightened his neck muscles on one side.  That then leads to his head being flatter on the right side.

We've been doing PT and it's so much better.  T basically has a full range of movement in his neck now and even sleeps on the left side of his head.  His head is getting back to normal too.  I think torticollis is getting more and more common these days- I know there are a bunch of girls on the August BMB whose babies have it, and there are a few babies here too.

  • Oh, C, that had to be horrible to watch. I hope everything goes well with the PT.
  • I'm so sorry you had to go through that!  I hope the PT helps little X!

  • Glad to hear that he's getting PT.  We've been repositioning too but I don't feel like it's helping enough...there has been very little change at all.   Hopefully your babe will have much quicker results!

I was not allowed in the room with Evan for his x-rays - hearing his screams was bad enough.

It's a looooong road. B has had PT for 6 months and still has a "tilt". His range of motion is awesome and he's hitting all his milestones but if I lay him down flat- BAM, right back to his "tort" side.

I agree, it's a really long road :(  Jules has gotten PT for a year along with using the chiropractor and although the tilt is way better, the muscle tightness is still there and it's a fight every PT session because she wants nothing to do with sitting still.  I think a lot of the problems are due the fact that it took 6 months before she could get services (so the sooner X gets PT the better).

  • C, it is so tough to see the LOs go through anything medical when they are little, but it is so good to get everything checked out.  Keep us posted!  Good luck with PT!
