TTC After a Loss

? for those that use any type of progesterone supplement

Hi Ladies!

One of my doctors suggested that I start taking pregnenolone - a type of progesterone supplement.  So I started taking it day 7 of last cycle.  This cycle, my chart is really screwy.  (I can't link it right now - but maybe later?)  But I was just wondering if taking this supplement made your cycles change.  I'm on day 14 now and had a temperature spike... and a negative OPK for the last two days.

Previous temperature spikes were on days 19 then day 17.  I guess I could be ovulating earlier and I probably just need to wait and see... but I just wanted to know if any of you had a similar experience... or if I can click on your charts.

Gotta run, but I'll see about linking that chart when I'm on a real computer.  ha.  TIA.

Re: ? for those that use any type of progesterone supplement

  • I take progesterone from 3DPO through the end of my cycle (or first tri, if a BFP).  I was specifically told not to take it until I'd confirmed O by OPK and charting.

Progesterone is supposed to make your temps rise, but since I only take it post-O when my temps are high anyway, I don't see much difference.  And my temps tanked last cycle the day I had my c/p anyway.

  • I have used progesterone while ttc but have always used prescription progesterone and always, always, always, didn't start it until after I knew I had ovulated.  Taking it PRIOR to ovulation could cause you not to ovulate at all.

Am I right in that pregnenolone is a dietary supplement which can increase progesterone but by itself it isn't progesterone?  If it's increasing progesterone and also possibly DHEA in your body then I would expect some goofy charts.

I would check back with your doctor and make sure you are supposed to take it throughout your entire cycle or just after you ovulate.  And, is there a reason he can't give you a prescription for progesterone?

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I already checked - and yeah - she said to take it through the ENTIRE cycle.  I didn't think anything of it until today when I was looking at my charts and I'm kinda thinking that ovulation isn't gonna happen.

This particular supplement isn't progesterone but is a supplement designed to have my body MAKE progesterone.  However, I've done a lot of reading today about this and what you said backed up what I am reading.  I'm going to get a second opinion I think.

If I truly didn't/ am not going to ovulate this cycle, I'm gonna be so mad.  Ugh.

This!  Generally between 3 & 7DPO is when you should start taking it.
