Passport Question for 2nd time moms

How long did it take you to obtain a passport for LO after he/she was born?  We want to travel in March but don't know if it's enough time.  FYI my due date is 1/2/12.

Re: Passport Question for 2nd time moms

  • My dd was born on 12/1.  We had to wait until we got her birth cert which took about a month and then went downtown Philly to get it processed in one day for us to travel when she was 7 weeks to visit her family in Ireland.

  • We didn't leave the country until this past summer, but it took about 6 weeks or so to get everything processed.  I know you can pay to expedite it if you have to.

  • After you get the birth certificate you will need to get a same-day passport. It will be more expenseive and require you to go in person. We are going to do that as we have to travel abroad with LO in March and I am due on Jan 16.

  • I'm in Canada but we got a passport for DS when he was a month old. It took a couple of weeks to get in the mail, but I'm assuming you could pay extra to have it rushed

    - the pictures are hilarious (as you have to hold them up).

agreed- DS was so wobbly at that point! They told me I could get a new pic done for free within the first year but I really like that my DS's pic is from 1 month old! And his passport (at least here in Canada) is only good for 3 years so we'll have to have it done again before too long.

  • We applied when ds was about a year old I think, but I was surprised at how quickly it came - just a week or two. Of course, it's always a crapshoot.

If I *knew* we were traveling within three months or so, I'd probably go at 6 weeks and then request a rush.

We're going to be traveling with this LO is 5 - 6 months old, so my plan is to go in and apply after the first round of vaccinations just for peace of mind.

I'm sure you know this, but remember that both parents have to be present at the office in order to apply for a passport for a minor... or you can bring a notarized letter, I think.

  • Only travel we'd be planning out of the country with LOs would be Canada, so we don't need them.

  • On a similar note, how easy it to travel (by plane) with infants?  My husband will possibly have a work trip to Aruba in February, when our little one will be about 6 or 7 weeks old, and I'm wondering if we should consider going with him.  We live in MN, so flights would be about 3 hours to Miami and then another 4 hours to Aruba.  I've heard babies travel pretty well, since they still sleep a lot at this point, but if anyone has previous experience with this, I'd love to hear it!
