Leaking...amniotic fluid or just normal?

I didn't think much of it because I know it's normal to leak more down there during pregnancy, but this morning it made me a little worried because I have been leaking a little bit more than I am used to...I just want to make sure it isn't the water breaking early..? I will call my OB tomorrow to ask, just to be safe.

It isn't running down my leg and I haven't soaked through any underwear, but I definitely have more residue left on my underwear than normal. It is slightly yellow in color and it smelled different, not like the normal smell of urine/normal leakage, it smelled more sweet. Does anyone else have this, or should I be worried about early leaking/water breaking..?

Also, I have been having crotch pain quite a bit but I have been having it for a while. It just seems a little bit more painful today, that and lower back pain.

  • call Dr in the morning, or tonight... they have on call Dr's to return your call. The main reason I say that is because you mentioned a sweet smell. Amniotic fluid smells kinda sweet.  My understanding of a "leak" is that it would be a constant leak, fluid would keep comeing out if you went pee for instance. But the hospitals have simple tests they can run to see if the discharge is fluid or urine of your body lubeing up.

  • I second the PP on the sweet smell being amniotic.  The medwive in my OB's practice said that it wouldn't necessarily be a gush NOR a constant leak...but everytime I would sneeze, laugh, get up and down...that sort of thing.  I'd call the on call doc to give them a heads up.

  • Yes, you should definitely get it checked out just to be safe, since you say there is a sweet smell.  It is not good if your water is leaking this early.  If it is actually amniotic fluid, they may need to admit you and try to prolong labor as long as they could and also give steroid shots to help with the baby's lung development.  Hopefully it is nothing, but it is better to be safe.

  • Get it checked for your peace of mind if nothing esle.  AF should be clear.  discharge should be thicker and whitish (yellow could be due to leaking bladder oh the joys of third tri)...but the sweet smell is concerning...this sounds funny but are you using a liner (unscented) and smelling that-I had worries at one point thought my fliud on my panties smelled sweet and when I stopped freaking out after they checked realize the "sweet" smell was probably my fabric softener LOL
  • That could also be a yeast infection.  It would smell like bread, but I know people who call that smell "sweet" as well.

  • Well I called, left a message. Just waiting on a call back. I don't wear any scented pantyliners or anything; I hope I'm just worrying too much and it's nothing, but we'll see in a bit.

  • Well the birth center in the hospital recommended that I come in just to check. It's probably nothing, but they said that all it takes is a ten minute test for them to make sure. I feel kinda like a moron because it probably is nothing, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Just gotta wait for DH to get off work so we can head on in.
