Cloth Diapering

Where do you put your dirty diapers?

With DS2 I've kept a 5gal bucket full of water next to the toilet to store my dirty diapers. The first CD  blog I ever read said she did this so I never looked into other options. DS2 doesn't seem interested in potty training at all so I'm guessing I'll have two in diapers for at least a little while. I don't think my bucket will hold diapers for two babies. I also don't love having to carry it downstairs on laundry day.

What does everyone else do? Where do you keep your diaper pail? If it's not in the bathroom do you move it there when you have a diaper you just rinsed? Does it smell?

Re: Where do you put your dirty diapers?

  • We keep a 9 gallon trash can with a touch lid on our changing table.  It is lined with a PW liner.  When it is full I take the whole bag out, and empty everything (bag too) into the washer. (I put in a fresh liner while the dirty one washes.)

I keep a hanging wet bag in the bathroom (it hangs from the towel bar) to store any diapers I need to clean prior to wash day.  When this happens, I just change my LO like normal and sit the dirty diaper aside.  After I am done, I put her in her crib (or somewhere safe) and take the dirty diaper to the bathroom to rinse.  It's really easy, although she is still mostly EBF so I only have to do this like once a week.

    There isn't any smell.

  • I have been using a diaper genie (leftover from using sposies with DS#1).  It does smell, mostly because it wasn't made for CDs.  I plan on getting a couple of large hanging wetbags soon.

  • I've just always used a cheap plastic pedal trash can in the laundry area so I don't mind if it smells a small amount.  I just carry it over there when I'm done changing.  I also have a bummis large wetbag as well that I dump in with the diapers.  In the summer and when I was in more cramped quarters, I would sometimes sprinkle a little baking soda in there closer to washing day.

  • Big trashcan with step lid that I can keep a PW liner in. then I take all the diapers and bag and dump them in the wash on laundry day. We're just starting to get into rinsing diapers, so I'm probably going to have to figure out a routine there, but it will probably be a lot like PP mentioned. We'll rinse and then bring back to the pail. No smell unless you open the lid. In between liners, I try to leave the lid open to air out a bit to keep from getting musty. So far so good.

  • I've also got a large trashcan with a steplid and PW pail liner. No solids yet, but I'm guessing when that time comes, I'll keep a large Wetbag in the bathroom. We'll see.

  • We're going to be using a Planet Wise Hanging wet bag in our room (baby is staying in our room too). The bag holds 20-24 diapers according to the website. Kinda on the expensive side though.

Newbie Q: What's a "PW" pail liner stand for?

    I'm guessing Planet Wise

This, almost exactly.  I use a 13 gallon step lid trash can with a PW (PW= Planet Wise) liner.  I have 2 of them so I can keep one in the pail while the other is being washed.

Also, DS is FF/eating solids so it's PB poo so to get them cleaned off it takes getting the dipe pretty wet so I don't want to carry it back to his room.

Many CD manufacturers will tell you not to store dirty dipes in a wet pail.

I don't think many people do the wet pail anymore.  We keep a hanging Wahmies wet bag on the closet door next to the changing table.  Before we got the wet bag, we used an old pillow case in a small trash can.  You don't have to keep your diapers wet if you do laundry fairly often.  I do the diaper laundry every day or every other day so smell isn't an issue since the wet bag gets washed with the diapers.

  • We use a 13 gallon trash can with a lid and a pail liner.  We keep it in the nursery but aren't to the point of needing to rinse diapers yet (EBFing) so I can't help there.  We have no stink issues.

  • Wet bag in a trash can next to changing area.  I do wash every other day and it doesn't stink.  But she's not really eating solids yet.
