3rd Trimester

My whole face is swollen....

The last few days I've been really swollen and I'm gonna bring it up with the midwife tomorrow because this morning I woke up and my eyes and lips are super puffy!!

I know I'm drinking enough water, and I'm not consuming any extra sodium so I'm worried it may be pre-e...Uggh!

At least I know that I'm far enough along to deliver if need be.

Who's dealt with pre-e/toxemia and what measures did your OB or midwife take?

  • I would call  today. My doctors told me to call immediately if I had facial swelling.

  • You may want to call her today and ask her if she wants you to come in a day early to triage. Swelling in the face is very serious and the biggest concern is that you might be progressing from mild to serious pre-eclampsia or eclampsia. If this is accompanied by headaches I would definitely call today. Also, you have no need to worry about LO being too early. Midwives consider 38 weeks term and baby's lungs are mature at 37 weeks. I had concerns about early labor myself due to my work situation and my midwife said even if my baby was born today she might need some help but would be okay. I would err on making sure that you notify your midwife as soon as possible so that you're being cautious both for you and your baby's safety.

This.  My doctor said that at this point if I experience facial swelling I should go straight to labor and delivery to get checked out.

This.  I'm being monitored for pre-e right now because of my edema and abdominal pain/headaches... Call... just to be on the safe side.

As for help reducing puffiness, take a bath.  The water forces the fluid to redistribute more evenly throughout your body (including bladder).  When you get out get ready to pee!  And you'll probably feel much better. Good Luck!

  • I agree with PP's, you need to contact someone ASAP.  My OB told me that facial swelling = dangerous.
  • I also agree with the PP - spent the Friday/Saturday before last at L&D being monitored for pre-e and am only out on Huber Law now because I was borderline...  Once the swelling hits the face it's time to go in...
