Changing table nightmare

For the last few days, everytime we put LO on the changing table he screams bloody murder.  You would think that the changing table has turned into a medieval torture device for babies.  He's been flipping over while we are changing his diaper for some time now, so we're used to that, but the screaming..... oh, the screaming.  He has had a bit of a cold the last 10 days or so, and I was putting him on the changing table in order to use the nasal bulb (because he moves around so much, I had to swaddle his arms down in order to get any mucus out).  Have I traumatized him, or is this an "I hate getting changed" phase?  TIA for any insight you all might have!

Re: Changing table nightmare

  • It might be the bulb thing.... I noticed the same thing in DD for a while in the mornings cause that is when I really went at her with that.  I would give him a toy and sing and maybe that will help.

Our issue is DD crawling away while changing her, while she is on the table.  We have a special you can actually play and eat this remote, remote for those times.  HAHA

  • the bulb is probably the culprit, and there's no helping it there since those boggers have to get out!

But let me tell you about the miracle that has made my baby girl WANT to lay down for diaper change time.   The Halmark Christmas 'Snowman and Penguins' singing thing.

It's the only christmas decoration in her room and she stares at it like it's the best thing on earth.  We run through a few cycles for diaper change and I haven't seen her so still since she learned how to wiggle.image

  • I have to give DS a small rattle or toy to examine while I'm changing him - otherwise it's screaming, crying, roll attempts, etc.

  • For the past couple weeks, DS has been especially crabby during changing time too. He used to love it, but now that he's on the verge of crawling forward, he hates to be constricted to one place on his back. I don't even change him on the table anymore, just use a blanket on the floor. Doesn't matter what toy I give him or try to distract him with, he won't be happy until I let him roll over and play. So frustrating- our cloth diapers have snaps and not the easiest thing to put on when DS is bum up.

  • Mine did the same thing. She had a runny nose for at least a week from teething and a small cough.  She was at the point she did not want her bottle just food.  Ended up that she had a ear infection and that every time I laid her down she would scream.
  • I have to distract lo when he's on the changing table.  I have this little, portable sound machine that came with his pnp.  I hooked that over the edge of the table and turn it on when I'm changing him.  It's worked like a charm.  He's a real wiggler.  Maybe a small mobile or something similar to keep him occupied/distracted?  Just a suggestion.  HTH.
