Eco-Friendly Family

Intro and question :)

Hello TEFF :)

I thought I'd do a quick intro before I get to my question.  DH and I have been married for almost 4 years and we are in our first cycle of TTC after BC.  We were going to wait a month... but we couldn't.

I've slowly been shifting towards a more EF lifestyle, and I want to have as much plastic, toxic cleaners, etc. out of our home before we get a BFP (however long that will take)  I'm looking forward to getting to know you ladies!

Is anyone doing homemade gifts this year?  I made almost everything last year, but this year my time is a little shorter.  :P

Re: Intro and question :)

  • Hello and Welcome! Props to you for trying to be more EF and getting the crap out of the house before your baby!

I am doing almost all homeade gfts this year. Crotchet hats for all the young people on our list, hot pads and fresh raw honey (from my parents hives) for the adults. And a 5x7 family photo for the Grandparents Aunts and Uncles!                         Also check out the post a few down because we just discussed this so you may not get many replies.

  • Welcome to the board. I've been busy making gifts this year. Crocheting scarfs and face cloths. I was also contemplating sending some par-baked artisan bread with some local salumis (french boules and baguettes are super easy!), but I think that with the packaging required to keep it fresh, it'd lose its EF-ness.

Our transition to living a healthier life-style has been quick and slow at the same time. We pretty much immediately eliminated junky fast-food and blatant ingredients like HFCS and then from there it became each time we needed something (cleaner ran out, crackers ran out, etc) I'd look up a DIY recipe and figure out how to make it my self. Our CSA and farm club has also been really helpful in getting us out of the mainstream supermarket aisles. Last year at this time, I felt like we'd changed a lot in the past year. This year is an even bigger change!

What's your biggest goal for now? What you're eating? Recycling? Make-up? There's some really great advice on this board if you stick around. Its slow at times, but your questions eventually get answered and its kind of a relief from the drama of the other boards. :)

  • Welcome! This year I'm making organic bath and body items from all local ingredients. I'm super excited! My SO is canning and pickling and we're giving other families gift baskets of food and my items [chapstick, lotion, solid perfume, and scented candles with herbs from our garden.]

  • Thanks lot for your reply!

So far we've cut back on processed foods a lot, and I am trying to learn how to make some of the few remaining items we use, like cereal bars for DH's lunch.  If contacted a local CSA about joining but haven't heard back.

We're also getting rid of plastic kitchen items and I've started making my own deodorant and household cleaners. I tried the no poo thing for a while and it took a very sharp downhill turn.  I broke down and washed it.  :(  I want to try it again though and figure out what will work for my hair type.

I'm planing on making my own babyfood as much as possible (when the time comes) and looking into cloth diapering as well.
