I prefer my DivaCup. It's mess and trash free, but takes a little practice. For cloth pads, I've had good luck with Party in My Pants (PiMP, lol). They're great and hold up well over time. They have a good FAQ, but the answer is you can wash them however as long as you don't use oxyclean, I think.

I'm another DivaCup user! I bought it off of babysteals a month ago and used it during AF this month with no leaks. It was so easy, hassle free, garbage free, and mess free! I know your question is asking about mama pads, but I couldn't use them because pads freak me out, so I thought I'd share my EF two cents.

I started off with Mama Cloth by using Glad Rags. They were the only ones I could find that were available locally. I liked them, and they were comfortable enough, but they would bunch up funny sometimes.
I ended up making several of my own using based on the pattern at the bottom of this page
Once you fold it and put it in place, it is very comfortable and you end up with 3 layers of terry and 6 layers of flannel for absorbency. I used these after DS was born.
I also LOVE my menstrual cup.

I love my Moon Pads that I bought off a seller on Etsy. They have held up well. Made of Hemp and hand dyed by the maker or by them in natural. The snap around the panty crotch panel with a pretty "cowgirl" snap. They are pricey when you buy them, but in the long run will save you a lot of cash. I have had mine for years and they are holding up well. The lady states that they should last at least 5 years.
I have a lighter flow since I switched to non-bleached and cloth pads.
Rinse then soak them until ready to wash. I put mine in with my delicate things or someties with my towels. Either hand wash or machine. Hang to dry with the pretty attached satin ribbon loop or machine dry. I do both depending on my time.
The hemp will smell funny while sitting in the soaking water, but no odor present after they dry. Its just a hemp thing. And no odor when collecting flow.
Oh and I started with 8 pads. you can expect a lighter flow and less need to change pad.
