LO is almost 1 (OMG), and while his hair is still wispy and baby-fine, it is starting to get a little long around the collar and over his ears. I have convinced DH that we can wait until he's 1 to cut it.
Do you cut your LOs hair yourself? I am willing to try, but I don't him to look like his mom cut his hair, lol. I don't see taking a 1 year old to a hair cut place (even Cartoon Cuts or whatever), though.
Any advice?
Re: Haircuts for LOs
I guess I'll give it a try. I never thought I'd be one of those moms who gets sentimental about a haircut.... I already regret not clipping a teeny bit of his newborn hair because it was so dark. He's got dark blond/light brown hair now.
We are lucky enough to be able to do it at our salon. Both of our hairdressers love us (and J) and they are always willing to fit in a quick snip for him after one of our appointments. They've never charged us, either, although we always tip an extra $20.
Sometimes they just do a quick trim, other times they actually wet his hair and style it. And I am always sad afterward. Because I can:

I bought some hair cutting scissors at Sally's (If get you get some, get the very short kind). The problem with cutting DD's hair myself is that she wiggles around and won't be still. However, when I take her to the kids hair cut place, they have a TV in front of her and since it's someone else cutting her hair, she's like a deer in the headlights and she doesn't move much.
So, for now, I've been taking her to get her hair cut by a professional every so often so she gets a nice shape and then in between, I trim her bangs to keep them out of her eyes.
We are lucky that my dad's gf (who C adores) is a part time hair stylist, so she has always done C's hair and he is great. I would be terrified to do it myself - good hair cutting scissors are SHARP and kids wiggle fast. Plus, my neighbor did a serious number on her kid's hair and it's taken two months to grow out.
I don't know Silver Spring places, but a friend takes her son to Crewcuts and Pigtails in Annapolis and they absolutely rave about it. They drive there from Southern Maryland.
I trimmed T's baby mullet once and have done her bangs several times, but she's in desperate need of a full-on cut to clean up the sides. She's over 2 - you'd think I could manage to take her for a real haircut at some point :P But I keep thinking that I want to grow her hair out and don't want to lose the progress we've maide since her hair grows so slowly!
Did you see the Living Social Deal for today that is 5 haircuts for $50?
We trim DS's hair at home and I take DD to the salon about once every 6 months and trim at home in between.
My mom is a retired hair stylist so she gave DS his first haircut around his 1st bday when she was in town. And whenever we see her she will give him a little trim, but that's not that often since she lives in Indiana. The other times we have taken him to Cartoon Cuts in Dulles Town Center, we like Mary there. We keep DS's hair pretty simple and short and it is super straight so there is not much to cutting it, but to be fair he is super wiggly & cries like crazy so she earns her $$.
We've taken the kids for three haircuts so far. The first was at DH's barber and to a friend's salon, but that was just to get good pics. The second two haircuts were just at Hair Cuttery.
They do a decent job, they were fast, and the other customers didn't seem to mind the screaming this past time b/c no one really expects a salon environment at Hair Cuttery. Also, it's inexpensive, which was important b/c our kids' hair needs to be cut monthly b/c it grows so fast.
I regret this too.
I kept saying I was going to do it and never managed to before all the dark hair fell out.
H could use a trim of the front pieces that are always in her eyes, and over the ears but I am too scared to do it myself and I don't see her sitting still to be able to take her somewhere. So we've just been rocking the shaggy look for now (luckily we can use clips in her hair since we have a girl!)
DH does most of it, I've done it a few times. We didn't cut a single strand until after the 1st b-day. DS is 18mo and we've only cut his bangs and over the ears b/c I just can't bring myself to cut his curls; I know we need to though, DD tries to braid it and put it up in a ponytail!
DD's only had her bangs cut and she has very long hair, past her shoulders, she's 3 and I love long hair on her so I don't see us cutting it any time soon (I should probably trim it though to keep it healthy).
Try the high chair, at his age, he probably won't even know what's going on, and we used regular scissors
My sister is a hairstylist so she cuts my DDs' hair. I cut DD1s bangs once and they were crooked and she wouldn't sit still (the falling hair kept tickling her). So I gave up cutting her hair and just let my sister do it. We are growing her bangs out so I don't have to deal with them in between cuts. DD2 has only had the front trimmed once, but she needs it trimmed again. But that's what barrettes are for.
If my sister didn't cut hair, I'd probably take them somewhere until they get old enough to truly sit still. My dad used to trim our bangs - they were always crooked and I hated it. Also, if I had boys I'd probably always take them somewhere. I think, if you don't really know what you're doing, it's way more obvious on a boy than a girl (hello ponytails, braids and barrettes).
