Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Do you give solids before bottle or vice versa?

Since we started giving DD solids (5 months old), we give her solids first, then her bottle.  But now (8 months today), I see she's not as interested in her bottle so I'm thinking about giving that to her first (so she's still getting the proper nutrients).  Just wondering what order you are doing?

Re: Do you give solids before bottle or vice versa?

  • You are supposed to bottle/BF before you give solids so they don't fill up on nutrient deficiennt foods and refuse formula/BM. Solids are only for 'practice' at this stage.

  • My pedi said we can do solids anytime, before or after a bottle. We were doing cereal first in he morning, then bottle but i just switched that last week. He gets a bottle at 7 am then solids around 745. He gets solids again at 1130, bottle at 12. Bottle at 5, solids at 6. So we do it both ways.

  • My solids schedule (9,12,6) doesn't line up with my bottle schedule (every 4 hours or so). I just feed when he needs to be fed.

  • I give them to her at completely separate times.

    6 a.m.- bottle

    8 a.m.- solids

    10:30- bottle

    noonish- solids

    2:30- bottle

    5:00- solids

    6:30-7 P.M.- bottle

  • We don't and have never given them together. Solid meals are 1-2 hours after she nurses. We've had no problems - she nurses well and eats solids like a champ.

  • I always wait an hour after bottle to give solids. LO set this schedule.

    6am - bottle

    7am - solids

    9:30 - bottle

    1:30 - bottle

    5pm - bottle

    6pm - solids

    8pm - bottle

We pretty much follow the same... I'm glad to see that! My DH said he thinks I'm weird that I don't do bottle and solids at the same time!

  • at 8 months we are told by plunket to change to solids first, I normally give 100mls with solids in his sippy cup as he is not interested in bottles that much anymore but is happy to take it with a meal

We do solids first, or she won't eat them. She still takes a full bottle after her solids meal, so I don't worry that she isn't getting enough.

If LO is showing less interest in BM or formula, I wonder if it might be better to reverse the order. You could try it and see how she does?

    Ditto this.
