So here's my first world Christmas problem

I have gone way over budget with the kids.  We don't really have a set budget, per se, but I know I have overspent and I'm really hoping H doesn't sit down and itemize everything (I've bought and returned stuff, so it's confusing enough that he won't notice.... I hope).    And that's buying AM almost nothing.

But anyway, movie nights are now also Family game nights, and we've been playing on the Wii together on Fridays.  The only thing we have that they can really play is Wii sports, but it's getting tiresome for everyone.

So I can get each of them a lame game, that they will be really like, like Cooking with Mama or Hello Kitty, for $10 each.  I happen to know they both really like those games, but I also think it would only interest them for a few plays.

OR I can spend $50 on Mario Kart for both of them, which we will enjoy, and best of all, we can all play at once.  I'm pretty sure we will get stuck playing the lame games with them, and it seems like MK is so popular, people play it over and over without tiring.  It's actually really hard to find used.

OR I can do the $10 games now (since I'm overbudget) and give MK to one of them for his/her birthday (or put it on their wishlist for someone else to buy it).  Their bdays are Feb and April.

 WDYT?

If you want inexpensive games, go to your local gaming store (GameStop here).  They have used games, a lot in perfect condition.

I actually tried that, and they're not all that much cheaper, with the risk of getting a bad one. MK is only $9 cheaper (and they didn't have any used in stock anyway), and that was without the wheel, which I understand is not needed, but I would think the game by itself would be more inexpensive.

  • Totally agree with you on GameStop. I've had good luck with used games on eBay as long as you are using a reputable seller. Amazon also stocks used games.

We have Mario Kart and DS has a hard time steering it. We like to play Mario Party together.

  • DS LOVES Cooking Mama :)

I'd go the lame route for now and then get something better for their birthdays.

Do you have a Big Lots?  I saw Wipeout there for $18.  DS would love it, but I had DD with me and I was afraid she'd figure something out.  I need to get back there.

  • So you would spend $20 on two games that you don't really like rather than spend the extra $30 on a game that you know everyone will like?  <----there's part of MY issue right there!  LOL

At any rate, you know my answer.

For my sanity, I would not get Cooking with Mama or Hello Kitty because no way would I want to play either.  That's worth the extra $30 IMO.

Mario Kart is fun as hell!  ;)  Of course, the wheels are going to be an added expense.

You could also do Super Mario Bros too.  And to add to your troubles (LOL) wait until TRU or Best Buy has buy one get one (50% off) and do it then!  ;)

  • If you're already over budget then skip the game altogether.  Sounds like they'll have more than enough to play with from their Christmas gifts.  And you can get the game in a couple of months.

  • Get a game you'd all love. We also love Wii Resort, moreso than Mario Kart. Not sure if its any cheaper though. At least you don't need to buy the wheels.

I was just going to say the same thing.  If you're over budget, I would skip both for now and give them the wii game for their birthday.   Their Christmas toys will hold them over just fine until then!

  • I agree that you should maybe wait for the games all together. Mario Kart is hard to steer...even for me. I'm not a big fan of it and my DD (4 year old) has a tough time doing it. We do like Mario Super Sluggers and DD can do that one
  • Ah, you sensible nesties! But you are right.  H agrees with you, but he said to go ahead and give them Cooking With Mama for both of them, since it was only $10 and we already have it and the it's only another $5 each.  They can play it together, and hopefully not need us too much to do so.  We'll get MK for TB for his birthday.
