Preemies

still not really smiling

So I thought Grayson had started smiling.  He's 3mths old one month adjusted.  He'd seem to smile when he was full but then he'd spit up.  He'd seem to smile when I talked to him then he'd toot...Plus he wont really make a whole lot of eye contact.  He will look up at the ceiling more than anything else.  There are other full term babies that are smiling and are only about a week under his adjusted age that I know.  Am I just being impatient or what?!!

  • You're probably a few weeks away from real smiles - it's worth the wait! Don't worry - and try really really hard not to compare your prem to his FT peers. Is he looking at black/white color contrast? One month is really little...newborn phase lasts forever with the prems.

  • He is only one month adjusted, which is very little and early for smiles. Try not to over think things (the eye contact as well...he is just looking around and checking out his environment, which is normal).

    It will come!

  • my twins are 4 mths old...1 month adjusted and they don't do real smiles either. Hang in there. I think it will happen soon enough!

  • I don't post much, lurk alot...my DD was 9 weeks early and even to this day, I think she is behind and wonder if something is wrong...each time I worry about something smiling, teething, crawling, walking...it's not much longer and she does it.  You will know the first smile...I cried when DD smiled at me the first time.  It's coming don't worry.

  • I wouldn't worry.  My twins didn't start having social smiles until 7-8 weeks adjusted.  That felt like such a loooong wait.  For weeks I thought they were about to smile and then all of a sudden they started.  The best time to catch smiles is first thing in the morning for us.

  • it takes FOREVER for premies to smile.  I think it is the hardest milestone to wait for.  It will happen.  After he smiled everything else seem to come.

  • My baby started smiling when he was around 3.5months, and he was born at 34 weeks.
