So I went to L&D this weekend because of a few concurrent symptoms. When I went to bed Friday night LO had a bought of jerky movements (probably just hiccups) right before I fell asleep. I woke up a few hours and she was making the jerky movements again. Then, she wasn't moving much for about an hour and half (definitely fewer than 10 movements). I tried drinking cold water, pepsi, and having a little to eat and waiting a little bit and she was still pretty inactive. I have also had increased discharge lately and it had been feeling kind of watery that day (I was worried I might be leaking fluid). So with all those things put together, we decided that we would feel better if we got her checked out.
So we get to the hospital and, sure enough, she starts kicking up a storm (she hates the fetal monitor). So I'm already starting to think to myself, ugh, we were just being paranoid and now I'm going to end up with a hefty hospital bill thanks to my crappy insurance. So they do the monitoring and an ultrasound and we find out that everything is great - baby, fluid, placenta, cervix - all wonderful. So we feel a little foolish for running in there, but at least we know she's healthy and can rest assured that everything I was experiencing was normal. So then...
The nurse we were working with comes in the room. First, she starts talking about how the new girls in the department think maternity nursing is all about playing with babies but that there is a small percentage that is very terrifying when things go wrong. I'm kind of confused about where she is going with this. She then starts asking me about my diet. She starts asking about sugar saying that it is something that can get the babies moving. So I asked her point blank, what are you saying? That sugar is related to the hiccups? The lack of movement? Does she think I'm having too much or too little? She doesn't answer my question, but instead says something like, "I'm just wondering why you waited so long to come in?" I was extremely confused at this point and I said, well, we didn't see a reason to come in until this morning. She starts with, "Anytime there is deceased fetal movement..." and I told her that it was when I thought LO's movements had decreased that we came in. She then said, "You just seem really laid back and I'm concerned that you won't go in to see the doctor if something is wrong." I literally laughed out loud and looked wide-eyed at my husband. ME? RELAXED? What a horrible judge of character! I am actually pretty neurotic and I told her so. I have had several doctors appointments moved up because I was concerned about stuff that the doctor shrugged off. So anyway, at this point, I'm totally baffled. I thought I had made a rookie mistake even going in to the hospital in the first place, and there was this nurse insinuating that I put my baby at risk for not coming in for the first bought of hiccups (which, by the way, LO gets all the time now).
All I know is that I want a natural childbirth and this lady seems a bit alarmist to me (and I nearly qualify for an anxiety disorder so that is really saying something). If she is on when I go into labor I think I might request a different nurse based on philosophical differences. What is up with some people?
Re: Weird Nurse? (long)
What a wierd nurse. if it was a concern the Dr would have come in and discussed something like that...
I had a wacko nurse with DD too. I ended up at L&D because I was having PTC again, (after yet another visit I ended up on bed rest and Procardia) but anyway... I show up, get settled in a room and get hooked up. This nurses come in, gives me an odd look and says.. "You the one who came in last week having suicidal thoughts and wanting to abort arent you???"
I told her politely no... I am not, she must be mistaken. And she ARGUED with me! We argued for close to 5 minutes. I finally told her "Look, check your records you idiot (yes, i said idiot) I wasnt here last week, regardless of your oh so great memory.
Dumb sometimes.....
First of all...Kristine...WTF??? I would be livid...I am so glad you called her an idiot. I would make sure she has nothing to do with your labor and delivery.
And OP...that nurse sounds like a freak! Its not like you had no movement all day. An hour and a half is nothing. My baby goes long stretches with little or no movement. I know this is normal for her and don't think twice. If I listened to that nurse I would be at the hospital on a daily basis. I would have been offended at the insinuation that you were ignoring danger signals. I would also steer clear of her when you go back.

Sasha.. that was when I was PG with DD.. not this LO.
totally different hospital too. thank god! You should have heard the A$$ chewing the head nurse got 20 minutes later when my DH arrived. That PG was prob'ly the most problem filled, stupid avoidable issues PG. I should write it as a birth story just to freak folks out. lol.
At any rate, I think this nurse from OP was kind of out of line. If you recall her name at all, you should say something to your OB. If you dont, most hospitals have computer records and they could figure out who it was.
OMG! When I was about 16 weeks along I had some spotting and cramping so I went to the ER, they wanted to do an ultrasound, and I had to pee so bad. I wasn't aware that you need a full bladder for an ultrasound, but I asked the nurse if I could pee or if I had to wait, she told me to go ahead because it would be a while before I got up to ultrasound. 15 minutes later the doctor comes in and lets me know I need to get a catheter because they were going to fill my bladder! It was 2 or 3 a.m., i'm 19, I was alone(DH is Army) and thinking I was having a miscarriage! Needless to say, I had become hysterical. So the nurse comes in to insert the catheter and I am freaking out, I didn't want it, I had been drinking water all night, I felt confident I would be okay. She almost FORCED me to get it. I got nasty with her, and with my lady parts all exposed she whipped open the curtain and stormed out leaving me the main attraction for the people in the hall. I called and complained the next day. A few weeks later I went back for the same problem, and got the same nurse, totally kissing my butt. Ugh. I was scarred for life after that experience! lol. Sorry for the rant! (: Oh, but I happened t ohave a full bladder by the time I got up for the ultrasound, I am SO glad I didn't get the cath!
