Help me to eat!

Here I am, 18 weeks, and I'm still suffering occassional M/S. And when I'm not, I just do NOT have an appetite, at all. I know I need to be packing on the pounds for the babies, and I basically force feed myself 90% of the day.

At my 16 week appt, I had only gained 10 pounds, and I don't think I will make 20 by 20 weeks... but I'm trying. I did have a few extra pounds when I got PG and I had still been nursing DS, so I know my body had some extra reserves.... but I'm still worried.

I guess bottom line is, I know I have to keep eating, and I am. Does anyone have any advice on how to make it more enjoyable and less of a chore? I remember loooooving food in 2nd Tri with DS, so wish I was there right now....

TIA!

  • oh, and to emphasize how bad it is... i have 2 pints of Ben and Jerry's phish food sitting in the freezer, and I'm not even slightly tempted to crack into it... pathetic.

  • I had only gained 16lbs by 20wks. Your appetite will slowly come back, just eat whatever sounds good whenever you can. I tried to make sure to have food next to my bed so as soon as I woke up I would eat (usually poptarts), and then i'd have breakfast at my normal time, an early lunch, a mid day snack, dinner and a late night snack. I was lucky that I was (and still am) always interested in carbs, so I ate a lot of pierogies, sandwiches and pizza.

Your doc will let you know if they think you should be gaining more, but I wouldn't worry about it just yet.

  • I had only gained a few pounds by that point, and didn't find out I was having twins until 19 or 20 weeks at my ultrasound. But I gained 51 pounds by 37 weeks when I delivered. Everyone seems to have a different pattern of weight gain, so don't worry! I think it was 24 weeks or so that my m/s went away, and then it was much easier.

    oh that's bad... LOL!

As pp have said, I think you just do the best you can and try to find the foods that you're able to stomach the best. I didn't have any m/s to cope with and was fine in the beginning, but have had really bad reflux the last few months and have been stuck eating lots of carbs/dairy. And as pp said, small snacks throughout the day definitely helped. I would hard-boil 5 eggs on Monday morning and take one to work to eat as a snack every day that week. I also found string cheese was really mild and easy to eat as a snack. Oh, and milkshakes! For me anyway, drinking something through a straw made it easier to eat more :)

  • You can always add ensure or muscle milk or the like that contains alot of calories that you drink. Put it on ice and sip it until it's gone and then repeat trying to get 2-3 in a day. I lived on sugar free carnation instant breakfast with whole milk the last 7 weeks due to GD.  Also I LOVE my moms macaroni cassserole and can eat it almost anytime so I would make huge pans of it and keep it in the fridge so it was handy to heat up whenever was ready for it.  Don't stress it, babies will take what they need from you and as long as their growth scans look good and the dr. isn't concerned you are fine! Good Luck!

  • I just made another post about this.  Thankfully, I can still eat, but I do have to force myself 80% of the time.  If I don't eat something every two hours, I pay the price, which is gagging....leading to getting sick.  I've given myself permission to eat things that I normally never would just so I can somewhat enjoy what I'm doing.  I start the day off with a big everything bagel with garden veggie cream cheese and nothing is low-fat.  DH usually brings this to me every day before I even get out of bed.  It seem like as soon as I move and I haven't eaten something, I get sick.  Next, I've been eating full fat greek gods honey greek yogurt with granola and berries.  If you haven't tried it, this yogurt is like icecream its SO yummy and its packed full of protein.  I've had alot of success when I start my days out with this routine, which sets up for MS free day!  Best of luck!!!
